AMERICA | A brilliant young man from Howard County, United States, named James Stewart, has fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a medical doctor after earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from Meharry Medical College in the United States.
James’ academic journey began at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he studied Biological Sciences for his undergraduate degree. From there, he continued to medical school—a path he had envisioned since he was 3 years old.

After earning his medical degree, James matched into a General Surgery residency at Yale University—his first choice. His emotional reaction on National Match Day was captured in a video that quickly went viral, showing his pure joy as he received the news.

National Match Day, is a pivotal day for medical students. It is on this day that final-year medical students across the United States receive emails confirming whether they have been accepted into a medical residency program or not.
Describing the moment, James said it was one of the happiest days of his life. Being accepted to train at such a prestigious institution made the long years of study and sacrifice worthwhile.
“One of the happiest moments of my life. I’m proud to announce that I matched at my #1 choice and will be attending Yale University for my surgical training,” he said.
The dream became even clearer during his senior year of high school when he had the opportunity to observe a triple bypass surgery. James said witnessing the heartbeat with his own eyes lit a spark that never left.
Looking back, James remains humbled by how far he has come. For him, becoming a surgeon is not just about clinical skill, it is about purpose. He believes he was created to do this work, to use his hands and his heart to help others.
For young people, especially those of color, who are chasing similar dreams, James emphasized the importance of being relentless and not allowing others to define what is possible.
There were moments along the way when he was told to give up or that he was not good enough, but he chose to believe in himself instead.
James draws inspiration from leaders like Dr. Nita Ahuja, the chairman of the surgery department at Yale, who proves that it is possible to innovate, lead, and lift others as you rise. James sees his journey as a continuation of that legacy—a chance to not only fulfill his dream but also help others achieve theirs.
“For me, this is only the beginning. When you make it to the top, your job is to turn around and help the next person climb. That’s what I intend to do, for as long as I have the strength to do God’s work,” he said.
