This young man earned Mineral Science degree with 4.84/5.00CGPA, wins best student award

A brilliant Nigerian man named Kasali Oladepo Lawal won the award of best graduating student at Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) after bagging an exceptional 4.84/5.00 cumulative grade point in Earth and Mineral Science.

Kasali’s achievement is more than just high grade, but a story of resilience, focus, and transformation.

Kasali's Story and How He Did It

Kasali shared that his academic journey started on an uncertain note. With just one B and six Cs in his WAEC results, he was considered an “average student” by conventional standards.

His first attempt to gain admission into FUTA in the 2016/2017 cycle was unsuccessful, but he described it as a blessing in disguise.

Instead of giving up, Kasali enrolled in FUTA’s Pre-Degree Program, which gave him a solid academic foundation and the confidence that with hard work, he could achieve anything. This marked the beginning of his transformation.

Once admitted into FUTA for his bachelor’s degree, Kasali set a clear goal: to graduate with a First-Class degree. For him, getting “As” was not enough; he wanted to deeply understand every course.

Kasali read to understand and studied hard with the aim of ending with a perfect grade. He ended his first year with a 4.73 CGPA, a few points away from a perfect 5.00. Instead of feeling discouraged, he doubled down on his efforts.

From his second year to his last in school,  Kasali consistently improved, recording CGPAs of 4.79, 4.78, 4.81, and finally 4.84 in his fifth year. He also achieved a perfect 5.00 GPA in his last three semesters and made the Dean’s List every single year.

His hard work paid off, earning him the award of the best graduating student in Marine Science and Technology and the best student of the school of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

Aside from academics, Kasali actively represented FUTA in competitions, notably securing 2nd Runner-Up at the 2022 NMGS Quiz Competition. He also held leadership positions, serving as President of NAMGS FUTA in 2022 and PRO in 2020.

He stated that balancing academics, competitions, and leadership roles was a tough. Kasali admitted there were moments he felt overwhelmed and questioned if it was all worth it. But he persevered, holding onto FUTA’s motto: “Technology for Self-Reliance.”

Kasali credited God, his parents, siblings, mentors, and friends for their unwavering support throughout his journey. With excitement and determination, he looks forward to the next phase of his academic and professional journey. ”Let’s go do the next one!” he wrote.
