AFRICA | After studying for 8 years instead of the typical 6, a brilliant Nigerian man named Ashraf Ogbansa has officially earned his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the University of Ilorin
His achievement is the fulfilling a dream he began nurturing more than a decade ago.
Ashraf's Story and How He Did It
Ashraf’s desire to become a medical doctor began early. Celebrating him, a former secondary school classmate, Emmanuel, recalled a conversation they had as teenagers:
“I remember in JSS2, during a random talk, you said you wanted to become a doctor. Seeing that dream come true today is humbling.”
This moment, remembered by someone else but lived by Ashraf, captures the deep-rooted nature of his ambition—one that began in childhood and continued to shape his decisions through the years.

Ashraf gained admission into the prestigious University of Ilorin in 2017 to study Medicine and Surgery.
While the standard timeline for the MBBS programme is six years, factors such as clinical postings, academic schedules, and Nigeria’s unpredictable academic disruptions stretched his journey to eight demanding years.
Throughout those years, he remained focused, attending clinical rotations, learning patient care, studying late into the night, and enduring the mental and emotional toll that comes with medical training.
In an emotional Facebook post, Ashraf expressed the overwhelming joy of finally achieving the title he had worked so long for:
“My journey in medical school has finally come to an end. Pleased to reintroduce myself as Dr. Obansa A.O. It was hard, and it still feels surreal, but I look forward to what the future holds.”
“I finally achieved a dream I’ve been chasing for over a decade. Eight years of school, so I can now officially introduce myself as Dr. Obansa Ashraf Omeiza, MBBS (Ilorin). It still feels surreal, but it’s an excellent feeling, ”he added.
Ashraf’s words capture relief, gratitude, and the quiet pride that comes from surviving one of the most academically demanding programmes in the world.
Emmanuel, who knew him from secondary school, celebrated and praised his determination.
“You might not remember, but I do. You said years ago you wanted to be a doctor—and today, that dream is a reality. Congratulations, Dr. OA. Praise God,” Emannuel said.
