This young man graduated from Harvard University as first Medical Doctor in his family, makes grandmother proud

AMERICA | A brilliant young man named Nelson Malone has achieved a historic milestone by graduating from Harvard Medical School, United States with a Medical degree. His achievement makes him the first doctor in his family.

In 2011, Nelson began his academic journey at Howard University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.

He then proceeded to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, earning a master’s degree in Public Health in 2020 before finally pursuing his passion for medicine at Harvard University.

Nelson credits his success to his beloved grandmother, Marion, who raised him and instilled in him the values of hard work, compassion, and perseverance.

His achievement is even more inspiring because he is now an emergency medicine resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital—the same hospital where his grandmother once worked as a cleaner.

Marion moved to Baltimore from Virginia at the age of 20 in search of better opportunities. She secured a job as a housekeeper at Johns Hopkins, making an honest living to support her family.

“Most of the people who come from communities like I come from, you don’t see that often. We don’t see people making it out of these circumstances,” Nelson said. His grandparents made sure he got educated defying all odds.

Not only was Nelson the first in his family to graduate from high school, but he also became a first-generation college graduate and Harvard Medical School graduate. His inspiration came from his grandmother’s empathy and devotion to caring for others.

When his grandfather fell ill, Marion stepped in as his caretaker, a role that deeply influenced Nelson’s decision to become a doctor. “Seeing her be that care provider to him played a huge role in my decision to go into medicine,” Nelson said.

Tragically, Marion passed away in January 2022, just a few months after Nelson graduated from Harvard. However, she had the chance to witness her grandson start his career as a resident doctor at Johns Hopkins Hospital, a moment that meant the world to both of them.

“I’m beyond sort of what my nana, probably most people in my family, would have imagined. And so it was a beautiful thing that you know, her very last year here, she got to witness me finishing medical school and starting my career,” Nelson.
