Despite being blind and crippled, this young man overcomes circumstances to earn Political science degree with honors

A determined young man named Thandolwethu Ngubeni has defied the odds, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science with honors from the University of Limpopo, South Africa.

His journey is a powerful story of resilience, courage, and the refusal to be defined by limitations.

Ngubeni's Story and How He Did It

Born blind and physically impaired, Ngubeni grew up navigating life with challenges that could have easily discouraged him. However, he chose to see his condition not as a setback, but as a motivation to prove his capabilities.

“I was born blind and physically disabled, but I can walk using crutches. My disability did not define me, rather, it became a catalyst to prove my capabilities,” he shared.

His academic journey at the University of Limpopo began in 2022 after completing his secondary education at a specialized school for visually impaired learners in Pretoria. Transitioning into university life came with its own fears and uncertainties.

“I was excited, but at the same time scared,” he recalled. “It was a new environment that required a higher level of independence.”

Initially, Ngubeni had dreams of studying Psychology, but due to limited space, he enrolled in Political Studies, a decision that would later shape his purpose and passion.

One of his biggest challenges was adapting to technology. At first, he relied on braille for assessments, which made academic work slower and more demanding. However, he remained determined to improve.

“I struggled with computers at first, but I knew I had to learn if I wanted to succeed,” he said.

Through persistence, patience, and continuous practice, he developed strong digital skills that transformed his academic experience.

Beyond academics, Ngubeni faced societal barriers, including moments where people spoke to others instead of addressing him directly. Yet, he refused to let such experiences define him.

“Sometimes people assume you cannot speak for yourself, but I learned to rise above those moments,” he said.

Throughout his journey, he drew strength from his family, who remained a constant source of encouragement and belief. He also benefited from institutional support systems within the university that created an inclusive learning environment.

As he progressed in his studies, Political Science evolved from a second choice into a true passion. It gave him a deeper understanding of governance, global issues, and his role in society.

“It became more than just a qualification. It helped me understand the world and my place in it,” he reflected.

Today, as a graduate, Ngubeni looks back on his journey with pride. “The path was demanding, but it was also rewarding. Every obstacle became a learning opportunity.”
