A brilliant young man named Jean Micheal has achieved remarkable success after scoring outstanding grades in the Massachusetts Bar Examination, earning a score high enough to practice law in any Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) jurisdiction across the United States.
For Jean, the achievement was more than just passing an exam. It marked the fulfillment of a dream he carried for years after moving from Haiti to the United States with little more than determination and hope for a better future.
His journey reflects resilience, sacrifice, and years of consistent academic growth despite the many obstacles he faced adapting to life in a new country.
Jean's Story and How He Did It
Jean began his educational journey at Essex County College in the United States, where he earned an associate degree in Criminal Justice in 2018.
Determined to continue building his future, he transferred to Rutgers University–Newark, where he studied Criminal Justice and graduated in 2020 with an impressive 3.75 cumulative GPA.
Rather than stopping there, Jean pushed further academically by earning a master’s degree in Criminal Justice before proceeding to New England Law Boston to pursue his Juris Doctor degree and fulfill his lifelong ambition of becoming a lawyer.
However, the road to achieving this goal was not easy. Reflecting on his journey, Jean shared that when he first arrived in the United States from Haiti over a decade ago, he could barely speak English.
To survive and support himself, he worked in a candy factory while taking ESL classes and trying to adjust to life in a completely new environment. Despite the challenges, he never abandoned his dream of becoming a lawyer.
After graduating from law school, Jean sat for the Massachusetts Bar Exam. His first attempt did not produce the result he hoped for, but instead of giving up, he returned stronger and more determined.
This time, he improved his score by an incredible 64 points and successfully passed the exam. Even more remarkable, he chose to handwrite the examination, a decision that required even more preparation and discipline.
“Ten years ago, I moved from Haiti to the United States without speaking English but with the dream of becoming a lawyer. My journey began in a candy factory, where I worked to pay for ESL classes while adapting to a new life,” he shared on LinkedIn.
”Through every challenge, I held on to that dream and kept going,” he added.
Now officially a lawyer, Jean expressed gratitude to his family, friends, mentors, and everyone who supported him throughout the process. He also reflected on the role faith played in helping him remain focused through difficult moments.
“I thank God for guiding my steps throughout this journey, for ‘a man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.’ – Proverbs 16:9.”
Encouraging others chasing their dreams, Jean urge them to let their odds define their journey. “Dream big and never let the odds define you,” he said.
