How Tiana Dinham won top UK Rhodes Scholarship to study for 2 masters degree at Oxford University

A brilliant young lady, Tiana Dinham from Jamaica, has achieved exceptional success by winning the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, one of the most competitive and respected scholarships in the world.

The award will allow her to pursue two master’s degrees at the renowned University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, fully funded by the Rhodes Trust.

Out of a pool of about 100 applicants, only 32 scholars were selected, and Tiana was the only awardee from Jamaica.

Tiana's Story and How She Did It

Her journey to this global stage, however, began long before Oxford. Tiana’s excellence was evident from a young age. Growing up in Jamaica, she attended Mount Alvernia High School, where she served as Head Girl, an early sign of her leadership potential and discipline.

She later moved to the United States to study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill), majoring in Geological Sciences with a minor in Geography.

Her academic path was not accidental. She enrolled at UNC through the highly competitive Robertson Scholars Leadership Program, a joint merit scholarship and leadership development program between Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill.

From the beginning, she was building a foundation of scholarship, leadership, and service. At UNC, Tiana distinguished herself as an honors student and researcher. She also became a Climate Scholar at the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University.

Her research focuses on groundwater and sediment contamination systems, studying how pollutants move through environmental systems and exploring ways to responsibly harness Earth’s resources while protecting fragile ecosystems.

Tiana won the Rhodes Scholarship under the Jamaica constituency. Her achievement was marked by a special ceremony hosted by Jamaica’s Governor General, Sir Patrick Allen.

Reflecting on her win, she said: “I am still in disbelief. It is an absolute honor to be recognized in this way… I feel both humbled and deeply motivated to continue serving my country.”

The Rhodes Scholarship is fully funded, covering tuition, living expenses, and other academic costs for postgraduate study at Oxford. Winning it places Tiana among a global network of distinguished scholars, policymakers, scientists, and leaders.

Tiana dedicated her achievement to the people of West Jamaica, who were recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Melissa. Many families lost homes, access to food, and clean water.

She acknowledged that even small moments of national pride can bring hope during hardship.

“They lost their homes, they don’t have food, they don’t have water… Even just a small thing like winning the scholarship will bring joy to some people, like hope at the end of the tunnel.”

As she prepares to begin her studies at Oxford, Tiana represents not just personal success, but possibility, for Jamaica, for young women in STEM, and for future climate leaders around the world.
