AFRICA | An exceptional Nigerian athlete and world record holder, Tobi Amusan, has earned a Master’s degree in Leadership Studies and Sports Management from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), United States.
Tobi Amusan broke the women’s 100m hurdles world record at the World Athletics Championships in 2022 at Oregon, United States.Before her postgraduate studies, she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion with a minor in Nutrition from the same university.
Tobi graduated from her master’s program with a perfect 4.00 grade point average, proving that her commitment to excellence goes beyond athletics.
She shared her achievement on her Instagram page with her graduation pictures recalling how she made up her mind to enroll for masters.

“ELOHIM is forever WORTHY of my PRAISE! Sat in my bed on a cold Tuesday night after an intense workout session on the 14th of Dec. 2021,thoughts of the oncoming athletics year crept into my mind, cried, prayed & came to the conclusion that I might as well start my Master’s program,” she wrote.
Tobi made her decision and registered for the masters degree at University of Texas El Paso through the guidance of her mentors. Meeting the requirement of the Masters program, she was admitted two weeks after she registered.

”Took my laptop; browsed through UTEP’s MSc college requirements & of course I needed an online course due to the nature of my job, I called one of my mentors @omoba_abiola1 , & proceeded to see him…sent the email to the liberal arts faculty advisor, submitted the required documents & got enrolled in less than two weeks. All thanks to the WAY MAKER,” she added.
Tobi’s academic journey was challenging being as she had to juggle school with her athletic competitions, especially the Championship competition She broke a record, but in the end she graduated with a remarkable 4.00 GPA despite failing during that period.
”4.0’s we’re perfect to discuss yet there was a remarkable F+ in summer 2022 of which my main relief was my WR 12:12s I just couldn’t keep up; I was depleted and burnt out. All I did was rest, eat, and rehash whilst competing in Europe, WC & the CWGames,” she said.
She expressed her gratitude to everyone who supported and encouraged her through the journey to earning the degree.
”To everyone who helped with my classes when my brain freezes up; I earnestly value your benevolence! To the ones whom I inconvenienced so I get my work done in their space ,thanks to y’all,” Tobi said.
”Couldn’t function in my room, i knocked out at every sight of my laptop just because writing is not my forte lol In short, Thanks to every single soul who encouraged me ‘coz omo mehnn e no soft at all,” she added.
