Twin brothers, Divano and Diego Blankenberg, have achieved a remarkable milestone, earning their Bachelor’s degrees in Engineering with distinction from Stellenbosch University.
Their journey is a powerful story of resilience, brotherhood, and determination, one shaped by hardship, sacrifice by their mother, and an unwavering commitment to building a better future.
The Blankenberg's Story and How They Did It
Raised by a single mother in Atlantis and the Du Noon/Flats area, communities often associated with crime and gangsterism, the odds were stacked against them from the beginning.
Higher education seemed distant, but their mother and the twins refused to let their environment define their future.
Their academic journey began early when they joined the Stellenbosch University Centre for Pedagogy (SUNCEP) programme from Grade 7 to Grade 10.
They later advanced into the university’s Talent Development Programme during their final years of high school—an experience that helped shape their academic discipline and prepared them for university success.
Despite the challenges around them, both brothers excelled academically, graduating high school with distinctions and securing admission into Stellenbosch University. But the journey was far from easy.
At just six years old, they lost their father to liver failure, and this loss deeply impacted their upbringing.
Years later, during their third year at university, their mother was diagnosed with cancer, another emotional and psychological hurdle they had to navigate while continuing their studies.
Through it all, they leaned on each other. As identical twins, their bond became their greatest strength. Studying together, encouraging one another, and sharing every moment, from struggles to successes, helped them stay focused and motivated.
“We pushed each other to do our best without competing,” Diego shared. Academically, both brothers also made bold decisions that shaped their paths:
Divano transitioned from Electrical Engineering to Mechanical Engineering after discovering his passion for design and problem-solving while Diego moved from Chemical Engineering to Mechatronic Engineering, driven by his interest in integrated systems and drone technology
Despite personal and academic challenges, they both graduated with distinction from the university. More than anything, Blakenberg twins credit their success to their mother.
“Her sacrifices, strength, and faith guided us. She taught us perseverance and resilience,” Divano said. Diego adds that being the first in their family to attend SU came with its own sense of responsibility and challenges, motivating them to strive for success.
For students from similar backgrounds, the twins urge them not to stop dreaming. ”Your environment does not define your future. With consistency, faith, and determination, success is always within reach,” he said.
