AMERICA | Twin sisters Jayda Watkins and Jayla Watkins have achieved an extraordinary milestone after graduating together from the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), turning a shared childhood dream into reality.
Their journey—from being womb mates to study partners and now medical doctors—has been widely celebrated as a powerful example of Black excellence in medicine.
The Watkin's Sisters Story and How They Did It
The Watkins sisters began their academic journey at Xavier University of Louisiana, where they both earned bachelor’s degrees in Biology (pre-med track).
In 2017, the same year they completed their undergraduate studies, the sisters made history by becoming the first set of identical female twins admitted into the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at MCW.
Throughout medical school, Jayda and Jayla shared a strong commitment to service, with a common goal of providing quality healthcare and making a lasting impact in underserved and impoverished communities.

In 2021, both sisters officially earned their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees from the Medical College of Wisconsin, Louisiana.
Sharing the milestone on Instagram, Jayla Watkins wrote: “Twins, womb mates, study buddies, doctors, best friends.”
She described Jayda as her constant support through every major stage of life, from high school to Xavier University of Louisiana, and finally, medical school back home in Wisconsin.
“Not only do we share the same DNA, but we truly understand how hard we’ve both worked to get to this moment,” she said.
As they move on to residency programs in different locations, Jayla expressed excitement for the future, adding that she looks forward to the day they are both officially addressed as Dr. Watkins.
Now, Jayla is working as an Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OB/GYN) currently practicing in California (Antioch and Sacramento), and Jayda is a Pediatrician practicing in Maryland
