AMERICA| Fraternal twins Imrane and Mounira Oumarou Ba, originally from Niger, West Africa, have made history as the valedictorian and salutatorian of Central High School, United States, earning top honors with outstanding grade points of 4.5 and 4.4, respectively.
Their remarkable achievement is a testament to their hard work, resilience, and determination, especially after relocating to the United States in 2015 and adjusting to a completely new education system.
When the twins arrived in the United States and enrolled in the Prince George County ESOL program, they faced language barriers and cultural differences.
Adapting to the American school system was no easy feat, but with dedication and perseverance, they not only caught up but surpassed expectations.

“It’s very surreal for me because I really didn’t expect this much attention. A lot of friends and people have contacted us and said, ‘Wow, I didn’t know you were at the top of your class.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, me too!’ I’m surprised,” Mounira said.
While Imrane’s initial goal was simply to meet graduation requirements, Mounira was determined to push beyond expectations and make their parents proud. Together, they navigated high school, excelling academically while actively participating in extracurricular activities.
Beyond academics, the twins embraced their passions. Imrane was a multi-sport athlete, playing soccer, lacrosse, tennis, and running track
Meanwhile, Mounira, unable to join the boys’ soccer league, found a way to stay involved—becoming the sports manager for her brother’s soccer team while also playing for the girls’ soccer and tennis teams.
She acknowledged that having a twin could sometimes be overwhelming but emphasized the importance of their mutual support, especially when facing new experiences. “It’s a relief to always have someone for support,” she said.
With their high school journey complete, the twins are set to embark on new academic paths at Louisiana State University (LSU).
Imrane, a passionate Lionel Messi fan, will major in Sports Medicine, while Mounira will study International Relations and Political Science, aspiring to travel the world and create meaningful change.
Despite their different career goals, they remain committed to the values of hard work, humility, and perseverance—principles deeply instilled in them by their parents.
“They’re happy because the main goal of moving to the United States was for us succeeding but when it comes to the limelight, they are firm believers in remaining humble doing what you need to do,” Imrane said.,” Imrane said.
Imrane offered advice to students embarking on their academic journeys. “Be kind to yourself. You don’t have to rush the process. Take it slow. Sometimes you just need to step back, observe a few things, adapt to the changes, and rock with it,” he said.
As they step into this next phase, Mounira looks forward to meeting new people and exploring opportunities to make a difference through education, while Imrane hopes to inspire others through sports and medicine.
