AFRICA | Tyriq French-Campbell, a former Division 1 American football player, life took a sharp turn when an unexpected injury ended the athletic career he had spent years building.
The NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-A, is the highest level of college football in the United States. But instead of letting the setback define him, Tyriq transformed it into a powerful new beginning.
Tyriq's Story and How He Did It
Before the injury, Tyriq’s world revolved around football. He played right from high school, but injury could not let him continue the budding career.
With sport now taken away, he was forced to confront a question many athletes fear: What comes next?
For Tyriq, the answer came from a place of purpose. He realized that his passion for helping others had always been stronger than he knew. And so, he made the courageous decision to return to school and pursue a future in medicine.

After the injury, Tyriq faced discouragement, identity loss, and the challenge of rebuilding his academic confidence. His grades reflected the emotional toll, often landing in the C range.
Instead of giving up, Tyriq committed to a new kind of training: academic excellence.
He studied harder, worked smarter, asked for help when needed, and slowly transformed his academic performance.
Tyriq returned to school with renewed purpose, enrolling at the University of Louisiana Monroe(ULM) with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, rebuilt his study habits, improved his grades from C’s to A’s, strengthened his mindset, and discipline.
He graduated in 2024 with an outstanding 3.00 grade point. Aligning his path with his dream of becoming a doctor, Tyriq is now proudly studying for a degree in Physical Therapy at the University of Louisiana Monroe.
