AFRICA | UNILAG’s Mass Communication department makes history, produces 18 all-female first-class graduates.
The Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has set a remarkable record, producing 18 all-female first-class graduates for the 2023/2024 academic session.
This historic achievement was announced during UNILAG’s 55th Convocation Ceremony, where a total of 16,590 students received first degrees and diplomas.
The university commended the graduates for their outstanding academic achievements, emphasizing their hard work, dedication, and resilience in the face of challenges.

The 18 outstanding first-class graduates include Feranmi Abiola, Ahuruele Akani, Oyindamola Arikawe, Ifedayo Ayilaran, Demiladeogo Bankole, Olaide Bankole, Eniola Daramola, Faith Enang, Temiloluwa Igbinlade.
Also on the list are, Joy Imanah, Ifeoma Iwelunmor, Chelsea Jegede, Opeyemi Kareem, Eunice Obidi, Frances Odogu, Mofesola Olanrewaju, Funmilola Onabanjo, and Peace Onuoha.
Reflecting on their academic journeys, some of the graduates shared inspiring stories of perseverance and determination.
Peace Onuoha, one of the first-class graduates, revealed that her initial aspiration was to study law. However, she found her passion in Mass Communication and motivated herself to excel in the field.
Despite juggling multiple jobs and internships, she maintained her focus and even secured an internship at a multinational company.
Temiloluwa Igbinlade shared the challenges she faced transitioning from secondary school to university. Balancing academic work with other commitments was demanding, but her determination and effective time management helped her succeed.
The head of the Mass Communication Department, Sunday Oloruntola speaking on the historic achievement, told BusinessDay that the remarkable feat was a result of hard work on the side of the students, and the lecturers’ commitment to helping the students excel.
“It’s not pre-planned; I believe that the students were individually hard-working, reading on their own towards achieving first-class. Some of them were intentional, they have been working towards that from their first day on campus and didn’t allow anything to distract them,” Sunday Oloruntola said.
“Besides, the lecturers are committed, giving assignments to encourage competent learning; pushing them all the ways to excel. We push them here, making sure they do things by themselves,” he added.
Moreover, Oloruntola explained that the increase in the number of first-class graduates is among other things, functional to the availability of learning materials via the Internet.
