AMERICA | A young woman bags Doctorate of Nursing at US university, joins 10% of black nurses with terminal degrees.
A brilliant young woman named Jazmin Richardson has earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from the University of South Alabama, joining the less than 10% of Black nurses in the United States with terminal degrees.
Sharing her accomplishment on Instagram, Jazmin reflected on the significance of her journey and dedicated her success to young Black girls, inspiring them to dream big and believe in their potential.
“Dear Little Black Girl, today, I achieved something I once only dreamed of. I successfully defended my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project to my faculty, peers, and colleagues. I may now be called Dr. Jazmin Richardson,” she wrote.

”But this moment isn’t just about me. I’m writing this letter to let you know that everything I’ve done, I did with you in mind—to pour into you as others have poured into me,” she added.
Jazmin’s journey to success was marked by resilience and determination. From volunteering at hospitals to becoming a Patient Care Technician, and now a doctoral-prepared nursing leader, she worked her way up step by step.
Growing up in a single-parent household with her older sister, Jazmin faced significant challenges. Their father was in prison for most of their childhood, yet their mother and grandparents instilled in them a strong belief in their potential.
“Although we reconnected with our father as adults, we recognize the hurdles we faced. Society often told us what we couldn’t achieve because of our circumstances,” Jazmin shared.
“But my mom and grandparents ensured we knew we were capable of achieving anything we set our minds to. With faith in God, ALL things are possible,” she added.
Jazmin proudly noted that both she and her sister have achieved the highest degrees in their respective fields. “We are not statistics. We are so much more than where we came from,” she said.
Encouraging other scholars, Jazmin shared her mother’s words of wisdom: “You were made for this.” She urged those facing difficulties and dreaming big to trust in God’s purpose for their lives and believe in their ability to achieve greatness.
Jazmin’s academic accomplishments also include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of South Alabama.
