AMERICA | Berenecea Johnson Eanes, an accomplished academic administrator from Los Angeles, has made history as the first woman to be appointed president of California State University, Los Angeles.
Eanes' Story and How She Did It
Eanes is a seasoned leader and social worker with an impressive academic background. She earned her B.S. in Public Health from Dillard University in 1988, followed by a Master of Social Work from Boston University in 1991.
In 2000, she completed her PhD in Social Work at Clark Atlanta University, where she researched attitudes toward marriage among African American male college students.
Over the years, Eanes has built a strong record of service in higher education. She served as vice president for Student Affairs at John Jay College of Criminal Justice from 2006 to 2012, and later held the same role at California State University, Fullerton, from 2012 to 2019.
Her leadership earned her the prestigious CSU Wang Family Excellence Award in 2018. The following year, in 2019, she was appointed interim president of York College (CUNY) and became the institution’s president in 2020, serving until 2023.
Her appointment at Cal State LA marks a proud return to the CSU system. Effective January 8, 2024, Eanes takes over from interim president Leroy Morishita, becoming the first woman to ever lead the university.
Her new role continues her legacy of championing student success, strengthening institutional strategy, and expanding campus development.
