Woman who earned 3 degrees while raising twins achieves another success, bags PhD at US university

AMERICA | A young woman named Montoya Timaya Majo has achieved another remarkable academic milestone, earning a PhD in Health Management from Walden University, United States, a success that builds on her earlier feat of earning three degrees while raising twin children.

Montoya’s journey is one marked by resilience, sacrifice, and determination. Before her doctorate, she earned three academic degrees from Nova Southeastern University, all while single-handedly caring for her newborn twins.

Montoya's Story and How She Did It

In 2019, Montoya made headlines after earning three degrees from Nova Southeastern University at a time she single-handedly nursed her newborn twin. She recounted the intense challenges she faced, including delivering her twins via C-section while enrolled in a demanding graduate programme.

Despite the physical and emotional toll, she pressed on and successfully earned a second Bachelor’s degree in Cardiovascular Sonography and a Master’s degree in Health Science.

Determined not to quit, Montoya attended classes until the very day she gave birth. Just one week after her C-section, she returned to class after being told it was unacceptable to miss a week of school.

Balancing academics with motherhood took its toll. She admitted her grades dropped significantly as she struggled to care for her twins, and anxiety nearly overwhelmed her.

Refusing to stop, Montoya enrolled for her doctoral degree in 2019, a journey she completed in 2025, with her twins now grown and thriving. Reflecting on her PhD achievement, Montoya described it as a victory built on unseen moments.

“This doctorate was built in late nights, deep exhaustion, and days I wanted to walk away but didn’t. I carried this through one of the hardest years of my life while still showing up as the perfect mom to two kids,” she wrote.

She expressed gratitude to her father, friends, and everyone who pushed her to keep going even when she wanted to pause.

“This degree holds every sacrifice, every tear, and every ounce of love that kept me going,” she said.
