AFRICA | A young African Lady named Awa Gai has achieved remarkable success by becoming the first lawyer in her family, earning her Bachelor of Law degree at 21 and a Master of Law degree at 23.
Awa began her higher academic pursuit at the University of Gambia, Serrekunda, Gambia where she earned her Bachelor of Law(LLB)degree. The year after, at the age 22, she was called to the bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of The Gambia.
Determined to further her knowledge, she proceeded to the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where she obtained a Master of Law in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa at the age of 23.
Awa’s passion for women’s rights and gender justice started early in life. As Head Girl in high school, she became deeply involved in advocacy, which later shaped her academic and professional journey

Awa was recognized for her remarkable achievements and she received the Most Outstanding Diploma of Arts Student Award during her graduation ceremony.
During her master’s program, Awa’s research focused on advancing access to justice for women in The Gambia using transitional justice mechanisms. Her research earned her the 3rd Place Recipient title in the Dean’s Essay Competition at the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria.
Awa dedicated her success to her late mother, who instilled in her the values of determination and perseverance. Not only is she the first lawyer in her family, but she is also the first to graduate from university, marking a generational milestone.
Beyond academics, Awa is a dedicated human rights lawyer and advocate. She founded She Awards Gambia, an initiative that celebrates women’s achievements and serves as a platform to inspire and empower young girls to pursue their dreams.
Through her work, she continues to champion justice and equality, advocating for marginalized communities and ensuring that women have access to their rights.
She added that her expertise and knowledge in human rights issues, particularly in enhancing access to justice for women, have positioned her as a leading voice in the field.
