Young African lady wins UK Rhodes scholarship, set to bag masters degree at University of Oxford

AFRICA | A young African lady named Magdalene Madugbe has won the prestigious Rhodes scholarship to study for her master’s at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

In 2022, Magdalene, a Ghanaian, earned her bachelor’s degree in Disability and Rehabilitation studies at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.

Upon graduation, she began applying for scholarships to further her studies, and fortunately, she was awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University. She took to LinkedIn to share her achievement of winning the scholarship.

”A week ago, I was a young graduate pursuing my goal of furthering my studies, and this week, I’m an esteemed Rhodes Scholar-elect. I’m going to be studying at one of the most prestigious universities in the world under one of the most prestigious scholarships,” she said.

The Rhodes Trust Scholarship is a fully-funded award offering successful candidates a full tuition waiver plus a living stipend of £18,180 per annum during their period of study in the United Kingdom.

The scholarship covers a settling allowance and health insurance. It also covers the costs of a visa and two economy flight tickets to travel to and from the United Kingdom. For more information on how to apply, check HERE.

She expressed her excitement at finally winning the scholarship and not just making it as a finalist. Magdalene stated that every single activity they did as a Rhodes scholar exposed her to different dimensions of herself, in which she rarely engaged.

Magdalene described her experience after she made it to the final stage of the scholarship as an eventful one, as she met people from every field who are making an impact.

She expressed her gratitude to the Rhodes Scholarship West Africa team for such an excellent organization and the opportunity. With the training and exposure Magdalene got, she is more than ready to transform the world from wherever she is.

”I met exceptionally brilliant people making strides in various areas of life. It was an exciting and inspiring time with newfound friends. I’m immensely grateful to Ike Chioke and the Rhodes Scholarship West Africa team for such an excellent organization,” she said.

Magdalene also thanked everyone who supported her in the course of getting the scholarship. 

With the scholarship, she is currently studying for a master’s degree in Translational Health Sciences at the University of Oxford.
