AMERICA | A brilliant African-American boy named Dante Christian has achieved an inspiring academic milestone, graduating from Pomona College, California, in the United States with a Bachelor of Arts in Physics.
His journey, filled with creativity, courage, and community, began when he won the prestigious Gates Scholarship, a fully funded award that opened the door to world-class education.
Dante's Story and How He Did It
Dante graduated from high school in 2021, and among thousands of applicants across the United States, he was selected as one of only 300 Gates Scholars. This scholarship became the foundation for his academic rise, allowing him to pursue his dream of studying Physics at Pomona College.
At Pomona, he completed over 16 rigorous courses across physics, engineering, and mathematics. During his undergraduate years, Dante’s academic brilliance extended beyond physics.
He earned the Hilyard Robinson Scholarship from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), where he completed a one-year architecture progra, blending the arts and sciences in a way that reflected his unique creative identity.

In 2025, Dante graduated from Pomona College with a degree in Physics. In a LinkedIn post, he shared that his graduation day was emotionally filled with gratitude, pride, and deep reflection.
He shared that with every step he took on stage, the fear and anxiety he carried began to fade.
Over time, he realized that the expectations from his family, mentors, professors, and community were not burdens. Still, wings, light enough to lift him through challenges he faced as an African-American, Jamaican, first-generation, low-income, physics major.
Although he was often the only Black student in his physics classes, he embraced the responsibility of representation with grace and strength.
He described it as being “light as a feather from a Sankofa bird,” always looking back with gratitude while moving forward with purpose.
His undergraduate journey also included a celebrated, A-rated thesis titled: “An Architectural Acoustics Analysis and Simulation of Mabel Shaw Bridges Hall of Music: Investigating Reverberation Time and Sound Pressure Level in Decibels.”
Dante’s achievements did not end with graduation. He has now been accepted into the world-renowned Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), beginning Fall 2025.
The program’s interdisciplinary, research-driven structure aligns perfectly with his background in physics, performance, and architectural design.
Reflecting on his academic path, Dante shared that it was filled with doubts — both internal and external, but every challenge shaped him.
He said his future is one that “honors the bravery” of all the versions of himself — the 15-year-old who never imagined himself as a physicist, the 18-year-old who chose Pomona despite its lack of a design major, and the 21-year-old who learned to weave humanity, creativity, and science into one promising path.
As he steps into MIT, Dante carries with him the love, support, and belief of everyone who contributed to his journey. “There will always be people who believe in you when the world doesn’t want to,” he wrote. “This acceptance is for all of us.”
