A brilliant Nigerian lady named Wisdom Okoh has achieved exceptional academic success, earning a first-class degree in Environmental Management and Toxicology from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Nigeria
With her remarkable performance, Wisdom won the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship to study in the United Kingdom.
Her journey reflects years of consistent excellence, intentional self-development, and building a strong academic and leadership portfolio that opened doors to global opportunities.
Wisdom's Story and How She Did It
Wisdom graduated from university in 2019 with first-class honours, distinguishing herself academically while also participating actively in extracurricular activities, volunteering, and leadership opportunities during her undergraduate years.
Rather than focusing only on grades, she intentionally built a well-rounded profile. After she graduated, interestingly, studying abroad was not initially part of her plan.
Wisdom immediately entered the workforce and focused on building her career. According to her, the idea of applying for international scholarships only came after one of her bosses encouraged her to try.
At first, the entire process felt unfamiliar and overwhelming.“The whole scholarship process was really alien,” she shared on LinkedIn. Still, she decided to take a chance.

She began preparing the required documents, writing scholarship essays, and submitting applications, even while dealing with uncertainty and self-doubt.
“This tedious journey uncovered strengths and abilities I ordinarily would not have detected in myself,” she explained. “It was mind-wrecking, heart-pounding, mentally stimulating, and most of all, lesson-packed.”
Like many scholarship applicants, the waiting period became one of the hardest parts of the process. After submitting her applications, she simply held on to faith, hope, and the belief that she had done her best.
Fortunately, she received a nomination email from the University of the West of Scotland and was also placed on the reserve list at the University of Bristol.
Soon after, she officially became a Commonwealth Scholar, earning the opportunity to pursue a Master of Science (MSc) in Waste and Clean Technology in the United Kingdom.
Sharing the good news, she expressed gratitude to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, her mentors, family, and friends who supported her journey.
She also left a powerful message for others chasing similar dreams: “Trust yourself even when no one else trusts in your ability.”
Wisdom completed her master’s degree in 2021 at the University of the West of Scotland, maintaining the same level of excellence she demonstrated during her undergraduate years in Nigeria.
But her journey did not stop there. Building on her strong academic record, leadership experience, research interests, and international exposure, she secured yet another major opportunity, this time at the University of Toronto in Canada.
There, she earned a fully funded PhD scholarship alongside a graduate assistantship position, allowing her to pursue advanced research while working as a research assistant.
According to reports, Wisdom’s profile stood out because she combined Strong academic performance, leadership experience, volunteering and community involvement, and research exposure with career goals and purpose.
At the University of Toronto, her research now focuses on developing data-driven solutions aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving sustainability across industrial systems.
Her work explores areas such as low-carbon technologies, environmental impact reporting, sustainable supply chains, embodied carbon analysis, and climate change mitigation strategies.
Through academic research, industry collaborations, and participation in international conferences, she hopes to contribute to global Net Zero goals and help create more sustainable systems across industries and the built environment.
