Young Lady finally graduates university after studying for 8 years instead of 4, becomes the first graduate in her family

A brilliant Nigerian Lady named Lisa Nkomo has finally graduated from the university after spending eight years of academic journey in a bid to get a degree.

Lisa obtained her bachelor’s degree in Logistics Management and Transport Services at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa. She mentioned on her Tiktok that her achievement made her the first-ever university graduate in her family of three generations.

Narrating her story on LinkedIn, Lisa stated that her academic journey was filled with a lot of challenges but she remained determined to earn a degree. She said that she matriculated with distinctions in 2016 and enrolled in the university the year after.

She enrolled to study engineering at the University of Pretoria, South Africa with a full-cost bursary however by the end of the year she was excluded. Lisa stated that she appealed and in 2018 her appeal was approved.

Upon the approval of her appeal, Lisa was readmitted to continue her studies. Fortunately, in 2019, she faced academic exclusion once again, and although she appealed, her appeal was denied.

Lisa shared that in 2020, she was dismissed and lost her bursaries, which made her move back home. Despite reapplying by the end of the year, she could not secure a spot in the engineering program.

She further shared that not relenting, she reapplied at the University of Johannesburg in 2021 and in her first year at the university, she got another full-cost bursary from a different company.



In 2022 while at the university,  Lisa said sje failed a module in her studies and felt like giving up on trying to obtain a degree and made a decision to drop out. However, she did not drop out because she was encouraged to persevere by special people in her life.

Lisa said she registered again in 2023 and got an internship in October of the same year. She said she was studying and working full-time just as she was about to start their final exams.

She stated that it was a challenging situation for them to manage both responsibilities simultaneously. Lisa said that same October 2023, she received a job offer from a different company for the year 2024.

She said that in January 2024, she began my new job and in April, she graduated in front of her grandmother, mother, and father as a first generation college student. She mentioned that her achievement is for anyone who believes that their situation is hopeless and that there is no way out.

Lisa said it is important to remember that it is not over and to keep fighting for a better outcome adding that they should keep pushing forward and do not give up. She emphasizes the importance of resilience and perseverance in overcoming obstacles.
