AFRICA | A young woman named Ntombifuthi Mchunu from South Africa has achieved her dream of becoming a nurse after years of hard work and perseverance.
Mchunu worked as a waitress at a KFC restaurant for four years to pay her school fees, and her efforts have finally paid off as she recently graduated with a Nursing degree and became a certified Registered Nurse.
Taking to Facebook to share her inspiring achievement, Mchunu wrote, “4½ years later! From a KFC team member to a Professional Nurse. It’s possible, Black child… Sister Mchunu,” she said.
Mchunu’s story is even more remarkable because she has made history as the first university graduate in her family. She shared that her graduation day was not only her happiest moment but also the fulfillment of her mother’s long-held dream.

Reflecting on her journey, Mchunu emphasized the importance of determination and hard work. “It is true that in life, if you want to achieve something, it doesn’t matter where you came from,” she said.
“It takes hard work and dedication for someone to achieve what I have achieved. I was very consistent. It was not easy to study while I worked, but I knew what I wanted to achieve,” she added.
Mchunu also used her story to challenge stereotypes about those who work in retail or service jobs. “This is a lesson to those who overlook people who work in retail stores and think they are not educated,” she added.
In another story, a 35-year-old Zimbabwean woman named Precious Sibalo has finally become a certified pilot after 12 years of caring for passengers as a flight waitress.
Precious had always wanted to become a pilot ever since she participated in a school trip at an airport. According to her, she realized there were no female pilots at that time, and it inspired her even more to pursue a male-dominated career.
However, her dream to become a pilot suffered a lot of setbacks after she was left to be raised by her grandmother. Her mother gave birth to her at the early age of 17 and could not cater for her needs, so she left her with her grandmother to look for a job in South Africa. Read more about Precious HERE.
