A brilliant young lady named Ya Kumba Houma, from Gambia has achieved remarkable success after earning a Master’s degree in Construction Project Management with distinction from the Robert Gordon University in the United Kingdom.
Her achievement was made possible through the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, a fully funded scholarship that covers tuition, travel costs, and provides a stipend for international students.
What makes her success even more inspiring is that she graduated as one of only two women in her class, yet still excelled academically.
Kumba's Story and How He Did It
Kumba’s journey of excellence began in 2019 when she enrolled for a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at Eastern Mediterranean University. Through dedication and consistency, she graduated in 2023 as the top student in her department and across the entire Faculty of Engineering.
Her outstanding academic performance paved the way for her to be awarded the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship in 2024, offered in partnership with Robert Gordon University and supported by the UK government.
Speaking about the opportunity at the time, she expressed excitement about studying in Aberdeen, gaining global exposure, and learning alongside students from diverse backgrounds.
In 2025, she successfully completed her Master’s degree with distinction. Reflecting on her journey, she described it as one that required consistency, sacrifice, and quiet determination.
