AFRICA | A determined Nigerian lady named Taofeekat Adigun has achieved a remarkable milestone, graduating with Distinction in her Master’s degree in Public Health and International Development (MPHID) from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom.
Her achievement was made possible through the Sheffield Africa Scholarship, a fully funded opportunity she secured after her undergraduate studies. Her journey is a powerful testament to preparation, perseverance, and purpose.
Taofeekat's Story and How She Did It
Taofeekat’s academic excellence began in Nigeria, where she earned a First-Class Honours degree in Public Health Education and Promotion. After graduation, she set her sights on studying abroad. The road, however, was far from smooth.
She applied widely and strategically with a total of 15 applications, and she secured 12 admission offers, 5 partial scholarships, 1 reserved list, and 1 fully funded scholarship
That fully funded opportunity was the prestigious Sheffield Africa Scholarship, an opportunity she had not initially planned for, but one that changed her trajectory completely.
In 2023, she enrolled at the University of Sheffield for a dual Master’s programme in Public Health and International Development, and in 2025, she completed it with Distinction.

Before her breakthrough, Taofeekat faced multiple rejections that nearly discouraged her from continuing. Yet she refused to give up.
And her persistence paid off. What seemed like delays and disappointments eventually positioned her for the right opportunity, fully funded and aligned with her long-term goals.
While pursuing her Master’s degree, Taofeekat did far more than attend classes.
She balanced academic excellence, work commitments, internships, conference travels, community leadership, and she co-chaired initiatives.
She admitted there were moments of overwhelming pressure. At one point, she questioned why life felt so chaotic. Looking back, however, she describes the experience as transformative, a stretch that built resilience, leadership, and clarity of purpose.
Taofeekat’s Master’s journey included impressive accomplishments. She planned the SheffWHO 2024 Conference with a dynamic team, and was featured by the Department of Geography for one of the best essays on racial discrimination and colonialism.
Also, she conducted a dissertation on social innovation in public health and development, focusing on community-driven and technology-enabled solutions, and collaborated with SIHI hubs to strengthen her research
Taofeekat also presented research abstracts at international conferences, including the AU Ghent Conference, the ISA Conference, and the GHAID, and published journal articles in The Lancet and Oxford Open Digital Health.
She participated in the Nepal Field Class on development and post-disaster resilience and joined the Insigneo Lab for impactful digital health research. Her dissertation now forms the foundation for an upcoming journal article.
