A brilliant young Nigerian man named Dabby Emezue has achieved extraordinary academic success, earning a 4.66 cumulative grade point average in Mechanical Engineering at University of Lagos.
His outstanding performance opened doors for him to pursue a fully funded master’s degree abroad, marking a journey defined by focus, resilience, and excellence.
Dabby's Story and How She Did It
He began his academic journey at UNILAG in 2016. Over the next four years, he trained rigorously as a mechanical engineer, consistently excelling in his studies. By 2022, he graduated in the top 3 of his class with first-class honors.
Reflecting on his achievement, he credits his faith: “I give God all the glory as it is by His grace that I am strengthened.” During his undergraduate studies, Dabby built a remarkable profile.
He earned international scholarships & awards, selected as one of four winners of the Erasmus Student Exchange Program (Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, $4,500) at Istanbul Kultur University from a pool of 10,000 applicants worldwide.
Also, Dabby earned core business and financial concepts including Risk Analysis and Multi-Criteria Decision Making, won the University of Lagos Endowment Fund for exceptional academic performance.
He finished in the top 3% of his class with a 4.66/5.0 GPA, interned at leading multinational companies in energy and power solutions, and worked as a Backend Engineer on a project for a Malta-based company.
Dabby published in the International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research and Analysis, won the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation (NHEF) scholarship in, 2021, backed by the MacArthur Foundation.
And headed the Strategy Team for the Professor Ayodele Awojobi Design Competition, co-founded an NGO (Reformers) to create awareness on plastic use, and received UNDP Nations Development Grant to scale NGO initiatives.
Dabby’s academic excellence paved the way for him to receive the Italian Government Scholarship (MAECI), which funded his master’s program in Energy Engineering at Università degli Studi di Padova in 2024.
During his master’s, he engaged in coursework and research on sustainability, including a life cycle assessment (LCA) of his commute using SimaPro. After the first year, he transitioned to a research-focused program aligned with his long-term goals.
In 2025, after completing his master’s, Dabby immediately advanced to a PhD program in Molecular Engineering at Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering.
His doctoral research is conducted at Argonne National Laboratory under Dr. Seth Darling, focusing on engineering ion separation of critical minerals using advanced membranes. He is leveraging world-class facilities and cutting-edge robotic systems for membrane testing.
Alongside his academic work, Dabby also volunteered with the Gargoyle Consulting Club on a pro bono project for the Chicago Defender Charities Inc., applying his skills to real-world challenges.
Dabby credits his success to the support of his family, mentors, lab colleagues, and initiatives like the Research Experience for Nigerian Undergraduates (RENEU), which helped prepare him for doctoral research.
