AFRICA | A young Nigerian man named Jimoh Abduljeleel Adeyemi bagged a bachelor’s degree in Applied Zoology with first-class honors at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria.
His remarkable performance earned him the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Scholarship.
With this award, he will pursue a two-year master’s degree in Environmental Contamination and Toxicology (ECT+) One Health, studying across three European universities in France, Portugal, and Spain.
Jimoh's Story and How He Did It
Jimoh’s academic journey did not begin as he had once imagined. His early dream was to study Pharmacy, and despite scoring highly in all of the UTME exams he took —271, 285, and even 301, he could not secure admission. But fate had another plan.
In 2018, he enrolled at Olabisi Onabanjo University to study Applied Zoology. Though it was not his first choice, Jimoh embraced the opportunity with determination. His resilience paid off in 2023, and he graduated with First Class honors.
Immediately after graduation, Jimoh started making plans to continue his studies abroad. But the journey was not easy. He submitted numerous applications, faced rejections, and battled moments of self-doubt.

Yet, through persistence, hard work, and faith in God, his efforts were rewarded when he received the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Scholarship, one of the most competitive scholarships in the world.
He shared on LinkedIn that this award will take him through three universities: the University of Bordeaux, France, for the first semester, the University of Porto, Portugal, for his second semester, and the University of the Basque Country, Spain, for his third semester and thesis.
Reflecting on his success, Jimoh expressed deep gratitude to God for restoring his faith and making the impossible possible. He also acknowledged the many people who guided and supported him.
He thanked his academic advisors, undergraduate lecturers, and research supervisors for their unwavering support. Also, mentors whose advice strengthened his application.
Jimoh acknowledged the Asat Foundation and JC Scholars for mentorship opportunities, Dr. Olumuyiwa Igbalajobi, who reviewed his essay and provided valuable insights at no cost.
He also drew inspiration from Isaac Newton’s words: “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
Winning the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship is more than just an academic feat; it is a global recognition of Jimoh’s scholarly excellence, resilience, and potential to impact society.
He stated that his studies in ecotoxicology will not only deepen his knowledge but also position him to drive research that addresses pressing global challenges such as environmental protection, sustainable development, and public health.
Through this opportunity, Jimoh will broaden his expertise in ecotoxicology, conduct research that protects the environment and improves health outcomes, and contribute to science in ways that serve both Africa and the global community.
