AFRICAN | A young African boy named Tyrone Iras Marh from Ghana has been awarded a 1.4 million scholarship to study for his bachelor’s degree at 4 universities in the United States.
He received offers from Duke University, Williams University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster all in the United States, an achievement he shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Reflecting on his journey, Tyrone spoke about the challenges and victories that shaped his high school years.
He often refers to his story as “The Tales from Achimota School,” which began with a a significant challenge: a tough decision between keeping his Rastafarian dreadlock and attending high school.

With the support of his father and the entire country, Tyrone challenged the school’s policies, fighting for his right to education and freedom of expression. His bold stand sparked national and global debates on individual rights and inclusivity in education.
Through media appearances and advocacy, he found his voice, speaking up for equality and tolerance. After a two-month legal battle, he emerged victorious, paving the way for a more inclusive educational system and inspiring others to stand against discrimination.
After careful consideration, he chose the University of Pennsylvania, United States where he will study for a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering for four years.
Tyrone expressed his gratitude to his family, especially his father for his relentless support and sacrifice, and also to his sisters for being his rock and inspiration. He also thanked the CEO of AikinsConsult who not only prepared him for the SAT but coached him through the college application.
He thanked the Founder & President of Young Achievers Foundation Ghana for the endless nights working with him on all aspects of his college application making sure that he was able to effectively convey his story.
Tyrone acknowledges the broader community of supporters from Child Rights International, from his tireless lawyers, and every individual and organization that stood by him. He said their support was instrumental in his success.
As he embarks on this new journey at the University of Pennsylvania, Tyrone carries with him the lessons of resilience, advocacy, and gratitude.
Tyrone believes that this achievement is just the beginning, and he hopes to make a lasting impact—not only through his studies in engineering but also by continuing to uplift his country and advocate for change.
