Young man wins UK Commonwealth Scholarship and went on to earn an MBA, graduating top of his class

AFRICA | A brilliant man from Malawi, named George Stephen Ngaunje, has achieved an outstanding academic milestone after earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Derby, United Kingdom, through the prestigious UK Commonwealth Scholarship.

His achievement reflects academic excellence, resilience, and global competitiveness, as he not only completed his MBA under one of the world’s most competitive international scholarships but also graduated top of his class with the highest academic standing.

George's Story and How He Did It

George began his academic journey in 2017 at China Three Gorges University, China, where he studied Business Administration and Management. He graduated in 2021 with a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, laying a strong foundation for advanced studies.

Following his undergraduate education, George set his sights on postgraduate studies abroad and began applying for fully funded scholarships.

His persistence paid off when he was awarded the UK Commonwealth Scholarship, a fully funded program sponsored by the UK Government and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The scholarship supports outstanding individuals from low- and middle-income countries, empowering them to acquire advanced education and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development in their home countries.

For George, the award marked a turning point in his mission to drive economic growth and sustainable development, particularly for Malawi.

George enrolled in the MBA Global program at the University of Derby, completing the program in 2025. Reflecting on LinkedIn, he said the journey, however, did not begin in a boardroom; it began with a background in Information Systems, which became a strategic advantage.

He entered the program with a clear goal: to bridge the gap between technical logic and high-level business strategy.

That background enabled him to excel academically, graduating top of his class and earning a remarkable 93% distinction in the Business Analytics for Strategic Decision Making module.

Rather than submitting a traditional dissertation, George chose a Social Impact Project for his final assessment. He developed comprehensive financial models for a non-invasive biosensor technology aimed at diabetes prevention.

The project involved building detailed revenue projections and evaluating funding requirements for a Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system.

His market analysis focused on a European Serviceable Available Market projected to exceed $6 billion by 2026, validating both the financial viability and societal value of the healthcare innovation.

For George, the work reinforced a guiding principle: data has no value unless it improves life. Reflecting on the journey, George described the scholarship experience as life-defining, marked by steep challenges, moments of doubt, and eventual triumph.

He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK for recognising his potential, dedicating the achievement to his late parents, George Ngaunje and Madalitso Ngaunje, whose legacy continues to inspire him.

He also acknowledged the support of mentors, friends, and families who stood by him throughout the journey, noting that he did not arrive at this milestone alone.

As he prepares for the future, George remains focused on building a transparent, innovation-led business ecosystem that empowers communities and promotes sustainable progress in Malawi.

He looks forward to engaging with the broader Commonwealth, Chevening, Rhodes, and UK GREAT Scholars community, forging partnerships with fellow change-makers, and contributing to impactful projects across business development, sustainability, and innovation.
