AFRICA | A young Nigerian Lady named Seriki Jaydiran, has overcome the tragic loss of her parent to excel in her academics.
Seriki Jaydiran graduated with an outstanding first-class honours (Summa Cum Laude) in Civil Engineering from the Southern Texas University in the United States.
During her undergraduate studies, Jaydiran was faced with the tragic loss of her parent who witnessed the start of her studies. Throughout her studies, she faced challenges of overcoming the sad memory of losing her parents.
“As I toss my cap into the air, I carry the memories of my parents, who started this journey with me but both didn’t live to witness this moment,” she wrote on Instagram.
Despite facing this heavy obstacle, Jaydiran was able to achieve a first-class in Civil Engineering with many awards including appearing on the President list, Dean list and Honour roll of the university.

She dedicated her success to her late mother, whom she described as her greatest support system—the one who believed in her even when she doubted herself.
“So glad to know I have made them proud. My mother, my anchor, my best friend, continues to inspire me daily, even in her absence. Though her physical presence is missed, I find solace in knowing I’ve made her proud,” she said.
Jaydiran’s journey to Engineering was far from the usual. She narrated that she originally studied commercial subjects during high school in Nigeria before deciding to switch to Sciences.
According to her, the transition was challenging but having her mother by her side made it easier. She explained that the death of her mother in 2022 compelled her to take a break from academics.
“I made the bold decision to change my path to science, despite the delays it brought(having my mother made the transition seem so easy💕) but little did I know, the greatest obstacle would be the loss of my parents in 2022 which had me taking a break from school,” she stated.
Jaydiran lost a lot time due to the pain of her loss and could not believe she was able to make it as a graduate few years after.
“If someone had told me in 2021 that I would be a 2024 graduate, I would have doubted it.Yet, here I am but nevertheless I’m grateful I took the break because I might not be standing here as a first class graduate today,” she said.
Reflecting on her journey, Jaydiran emphasized that success is not about how fast you achieve your goals but how well you persevere through challenges.
”Through it all, I held onto the belief that it’s not about how long it takes, but about how well we persevere. With God’s guidance and unwavering determination, I reached the finish line, still graduating as a first-class student.,” she said.
Jaydiran concluded by dedicating her triumph to her late parents, acknowledging their love, sacrifices, and unwavering support.
”This achievement is not just mine; it’s a testament to the love, support, and sacrifices of my mom. I carry her legacy with pride as I embark on the next chapter of my journey,” Jaydiran said.
