AFRICA | A young Nigerian man named Ademola Adeleke who once dropped out of high school after losing his vision, has defied the odds to achieve academic success.
He won the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship, which enabled him to pursue and complete a master’s degree in Disability Studies at Liverpool Hope University in the United Kingdom.
Sharing his journey on LinkedIn, Ademola described his achievement as a major victory, given the challenges he faced. After losing his sight, he was forced to drop out of high school for four years before resuming his education.
Despite the setback, he remained determined and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Winning the Commonwealth Scholarship was a dream come true for Ademola, especially after facing multiple rejections from fully funded scholarship programs.

Upon getting to the United Kingdom, Ademola faced some challenges. He said he struggled with understanding the unique accent of Liverpool and would have to strain his four remaining senses as a blind man just to understand the contributions of his classmates.
Ademola expressed his excitement about the degree after months of interactive class sessions, PowerPoint presentations, reflective essays, group discussions, and critical writing. He mentioned that his dissertation focused on the misrepresentation of blindness in Nollywood films.
While at the university, Ademola also completed a 7-week summer internship. He said even though it was a short-term placement, he garnered more than enough experience that he is thankful for.
Though the academic journey was overwhelming, Ademola said his achievement left him with a feeling of fulfillment at the end of it all.
