Young teenage boy wins $100,000 scholarship to US university, set to become an Engineer

A young teenage boy named James Ropotar has won a scholarship worth 100 thousand dollars to study for his bachelor’s degree at the University of British Columbia, United States.

James was awarded the prestigious Schulich Engineering scholarship to study for his bachelor’s degree. He stated that the money would be put to an engineering or applied science degree at the University of British Columbia.

“Winning this award has definitely changed my life. The Schulich Award allows me to focus on my studies and give back to my community. The network connects me with many brilliant minds across Canada, and I’m excited to learn from them.” he said.

James graduated from Okanagan Mission Secondary. Talking about his passion for Engineering, He stated that he has always loved to build and create things, playing with model trains, Lego, and later Minecraft.

”I loved to create machines, find a way to make my trains climb steps – anything I could dream up, I’ve always enjoyed finding a way to create. Innovation runs through me too. I’ve always wanted to change the world,” HE SAID.

The Principal of Okanagan Mission Secondary stated that the school is very proud of James’ accomplishment adding that he has always been hardworking and intelligent since elementary school.

“We are incredibly proud of James. I’ve actually known him since his elementary school days and he’s always been a hard-working, thoughtful, and highly intelligent student. He constantly challenges himself and strives for excellence. He is such a deserving recipient of this award,” he said.


James mentioned that after his undergraduate studies, he plans on doing a Master’s degree to further specialize in some form of engineering. He stated that his goal is to change the world in some way and make a positive impact on the lives of others.
