AMERICA | An exceptional 10-year-old girl, Honey Cooper, has made history as the youngest student enrolled at San Bernardino Valley College in California, United States.
What makes her achievement even more remarkable is that she accomplished this while still in elementary school — becoming a dual-enrollment student at an age when most children are just beginning to explore middle school-level academics.
Honey's Story and How She Did It
Honey is a fourth grader at Kimbark Elementary School, where she continues her primary education while also taking college courses.
“I go to Kimbark Elementary School and Valley College,” Honey proudly shared. Her principal, Brittany Zuniga, described the achievement as extremely rare and groundbreaking.
“She’s paving the way. She’s opening the doors for everybody else, because many of us didn’t even think this was a possibility, an elementary student enrolling dually in college.”
Despite being in the fourth grade, Honey’s academic abilities are far advanced, with math skills at approximately a seventh-grade level and reading skills at about a twelfth-grade level.
Her intellectual growth became noticeable early in life. Although she did not talk much as a baby, by 18 months old, her development accelerated significantly. The youngest of five children, Honey eventually taught herself how to read.
After recognizing her exceptional ability, the assistant superintendent of student services, Sandra Rodriguez, helped facilitate the opportunity for Honey to enroll in college courses — something previously rare for public school students her age.
Honey’s mother, Mia Cooper, emphasizes the importance of balance in her daughter’s life. Screen time is limited at home, and maintaining friendships and social development is a priority.
“Spending time with her friends is very important, because you have to work on that social skill,” her mother explained.
Honey herself acknowledges that managing both elementary school and college requires discipline: “It really is a lot, but if you really balance it, it could go really smoothly.”
Honey hopes her journey inspires children, parents, and teachers to believe in greater possibilities. “This can help kids, parents, and even teachers… anyone can do what I’m doing right now.”
Her biggest motivation, she says, has been her family’s constant encouragement to try her best and never give up.
Outside academics, Honey enjoys theater, reading, and spending time with friends and family. She hopes to pursue a career in them later in the future.
“I either want to be a surgeon, an artist, or a fashion designer.”
