AFRICA | An exceptional 18-year-old African innovator, Bohlale Mphahlele, has developed a groundbreaking wearable safety technology designed to protect women and children from gender-based violence and human trafficking.

Bohlale's Story and How She Did It
In 2020, As a Grade 11 student at SJ van der Merwe Technical High School in Limpopo, South Africa, Bohlale designed a life-saving device she calls the Alerting Earpiece. The invention is a discreet, fashionable earring that can quietly send distress signals, share live GPS locations, and capture photos of attackers at the press of a hidden button.
The idea was born out of South Africa’s alarming crisis of gender-based violence and human trafficking.
With tens of thousands of sexual offences recorded annually in South Africa , Bohlale felt there is a way she could find a solution to that. Instead, she asked a bold question: What could she build to help victims escape and be found without alerting their attackers?

Her solution was both innovative and practical. The Alerting Earpiece functions as a silent emergency system. Once activated, it sends alerts to trusted contacts and law enforcement, transmits the wearer’s real-time location, and discreetly takes photographs using a hidden camera.
These images, combined with location data, can help track victims, identify suspects, and strengthen legal evidence.
The wearable prototype quickly gained recognition, earning a bronze medal in the engineering-electronics category at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.
Her work attracted national and international attention, with features on BBC Africa, Metro FM, and SABC Morning Live. Limpopo’s Education MEC publicly praised her, describing her as a “role model and change-maker.”
What began as a school project has since evolved into a social technology startup. After completing high school, Bohlale founded Mphahlele Alerts (Pty) Ltd, with plans to further develop and commercialise the Alerting Earpiece.
Her long-term vision is to integrate the device into a national emergency response and community safety system across South Africa.
Although still under development for large-scale release, the invention has already sparked nationwide conversations about using local technology to protect vulnerable populations.
Beyond her invention, Bohlale continues to make an impact. She actively mentors young girls in science and innovation, serves as a Science Club President, and works as a youth radio presenter, where she advocates for women in technology and the use of engineering to solve everyday problems.
