Meet Marycynthia Osefo UNN’s overall best student who earned Pharmacy degree with 4.95/5.00CGPA

An exceptional young lady named Marycynthia Osefo has emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), earning a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree with an outstanding 4.95 out of 5.00 CGPA.

Her exceptional academic performance also led to her induction into the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria as a pharmacist. At graduation, she received 15 notable awards and recognitions, cementing her place as one of the university’s most distinguished scholars

Marycynthia's Story and How She Did It

Marycynthia began her academic journey in 2019. From her very first year, she maintained a record of consistent excellence, finishing at the top of her class every semester and academic session throughout her time at UNN.

In recognition of her academic brilliance, she was selected in 2024 by the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation as one of the “1% of the 1%” undergraduate scholars in Nigeria — a prestigious distinction reserved for the country’s most outstanding students.

Beyond academics, Marycynthia demonstrated remarkable leadership. During her time in school, she served in several key roles, including Vice President, Academic Coordinator, CAPSAN, Assistant Welfare Chairperson, ISPOR, Welfare Chairperson, ISPOR (2024)

She is also served as the House of Representatives Member, PANS for the university. Her leadership roles reflected her dedication not just to personal success, but to contributing meaningfully to her academic community.

To deepen her practical knowledge in pharmacy, Marycynthia completed internships at the University of Nigeria Medical Center, Vion Pharmacy, Lagos, and Ecomed Zita Pharmacy.

These experiences strengthened her expertise in prescription interpretation, drug dispensing, and patient counseling, preparing her for impactful practice in the healthcare sector.

Marycynthia’s excellence earned her numerous awards, including the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria Award for Overall Best Graduating Student, the Dr. Ozed Nneji Prize for Overall Best Graduating Student, the Bulgar Pharmacy Nigeria Award, and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Enugu Branch Award.

Also, she received the Dr. Afam Nwangwu Prize for Best Graduating Student in Forensics, Madam Cecilia Chinelo Nneji Memorial Prize, Nemel Pharmaceutical Company Ltd Award, Nature’s Corner Award, Ekomed Award, and Shalina Young Talent Award.

Beyond recognition and awards, Marycynthia’s excellence earned her funding opportunities, including the Chevron Scholarship, UNN USA Scholarship, Zeribe Nwosu Foundation Award, and Nigeria Higher Education Foundation Scholar.

In total, she received 15 major awards at graduation, a rare and historic accomplishment. Sharing her milestone on LinkedIn, Marycynthia shared that her achievement is a reflection of the years of discipline and unwavering dedication.

“This moment is more than a personal milestone; it is a reflection of years of discipline, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence,” Marycynthia said.

”Graduating at the top of my class did not happen in isolation; it was built on consistency, sacrifice, and the courage to show up even on the hardest days.n I carry with me a strong sense of identity, purpose, and a drive to make meaningful contributions to healthcare, both locally and globally,” she added.

Marycynthia expressed deep gratitude to her family, friends, mentors, and colleagues who supported her throughout the journey.
