Despite working to care for her son, this 33-year-old single mother earned Nursing degree with honors

A remarkable 33-year-old single mother named Briana Carter has earned her Nursing degree from Compton College, California, while juggling work, long study hours, and the responsibility of raising her young son alone.

Her achievement is remarkable, not just because she completed a demanding nursing program, but because she did so while carrying responsibilities that would have discouraged many.

From early-morning clinicals to late-night studying, Briana pushed through every barrier with persistence and purpose.

Briana's Story and How She Did It

Growing up, Briana always knew two things. She wanted to be a mother, and she wanted a purposeful career. What she didn’t expect was that motherhood would come before her professional goals.

Raising her son became her first calling, and as a single mother, she learned early what sacrifice truly meant.

Still, she held on to her dream of becoming a nurse, of building a stable future and a meaningful career. She started this journey with nothing but faith, determination, and the love she shared with her then four-year-old son.

From the very beginning, Briana’s path was steep. She worked to provide for her son, cared for him daily, and still committed herself fully to the nursing program—one known for its intensity.

She described the emotional and physical demands of the program, 4 a.m. wake-ups for clinical rotations, Long days until 9 p.m., juggling classes, clinicals, and assignments, and weekends spent studying for multiple tests

Briana also recalled going through papers, group projects, clinical assignments, and household responsibilities with the constant pressure to pass every exam, with no room for failure

There were days exhaustion felt heavier than hope, but she continued to push forward because her son deserved a better future. For so many reasons, time and time again, reality told me this was impossible. But I sacrificed my time and so did my son to create the life he deserves,” she said.

Throughout her journey, Briana found strength in motherhood. Her son watched her study, work, and push through fatigue. He made sacrifices with her, quiet evenings, long hours, and moments when she could not always be present.

To her, graduation was more than a personal win. It was a shared victory and a symbol of resilience, love, and unwavering belief.

Briana credited her strength to God, acknowledging the faith that carried her through the hardest parts of her journey: “God gave me strength each day when I needed it most. For that, I am forever grateful.”
