AMERICA | A brilliant young girl named Chyna Mays emerged as the overall best graduating student of Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology, with an impressive 4.91 grade point average.
Her academic excellence earned her acceptance into 16 top universities, including Brown University, Stanford University, Columbia University, Rice University, Cornell University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
Chyna credited her success to her parents, discipline, and strong academic focus. Her mother, Demeka Breedlove-Mays, said that she and her husband, both first-generation college graduates, had been guiding their children toward academic excellence since birth.
“We always had a plan for them, but Ivy League schools or top universities weren’t part of it at first,” Demeka shared.

“We just wanted them to get full scholarships to great schools. But one day, Chyna came home from an elementary school college fair and declared that she wanted to go to Yale. That’s when we really started researching admission requirements and costs. We told her what it would take—and she worked for it,” she added.
From kindergarten through 12th grade, Chyna maintained straight A’s in all her classes, including Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
Of the universities she was accepted, Chyna chose Stanford University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering, graduating in 2021.
Continuing her academic journey, Chyna’s brilliance and hard work led to another remarkable achievement—she was accepted into a PhD program in Biological Engineering skipping the norms of earning a master’s degree first.
