Brilliant Nigerian PhD student wins multiple awards in the US, celebrates achievement

AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian man named Kolawole Emmanuel Adesina, a PhD student at Purdue University, has been recognized with multiple excellence awards for his groundbreaking research in radiation protection and environmental health.

Kolawole’s journey began at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Nigeria, where he graduated with a First-Class Bachelor’s degree in Physics in 2019. Following his studies, he completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and was retained as a Graduate Assistant at TASUED.

In this role, he supported undergraduate teaching, assisted with administrative tasks, and contributed to academic research. This hands-on experience deepened his passion for radiation safety, environmental monitoring, and public health.

Kolawole proceeded to study for a Master of Science in Physics at Olabisi Onabanjo University in 2022, specializing in Radiation and Health Physics. His research focused on dosimetry, radiation safety, and environmental exposure assessment.

Later that year, he moved to the United States to further his education, initially enrolling at Missouri University of Science and Technology before transferring to Purdue University in 2023.

At Purdue, he secured a graduate research assistantship, which covered his tuition, provided a stipend, and included subsidized health insurance as he embarked on a PhD in Health Physics.

Kolawole’s research has earned him numerous awards from prestigious organizations, including the Health Physics Society (HPS), the Society of Toxicology (SOT), and Purdue University’s School of Health Sciences.

His work focuses on developing innovative tools to monitor toxic metal exposure and understanding how environmental contaminants impact human health.

One of his most notable achievements was being awarded the Toxicologists of African Origin (TAO) Endowment Fund Student Travel Award and the Inhalation and Respiratory Specialty Section (IRSS) emka-SCIREQ Special Award by the Society of Toxicology.

Kolawole’s contributions to environmental health and health physics were also recognized in 2024 when he received the Student Achievement Award from the Medical Devices and Combination Product Specialty Section (MDCPSS).

In addition, he was honored with the Robert S. Landauer, Sr. Memorial Fellowship from the Health Physics Society, an award given to students demonstrating academic excellence and commitment to radiation protection and dosimetry.

Beyond his academic assistantship, Kolawole secured several competitive grants and fellowships that supported his research and travel to international conferences.

Looking ahead, Kolawole envisions a career that blends research, teaching, and community impact.

He hopes to become a professor and independent researcher, leading studies that advance scientific knowledge while working closely with policymakers, public health organizations, and local communities, particularly in low-resource areas such as Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.

For students aspiring to pursue graduate studies abroad, he emphasizes the importance of early preparation. “Start planning from your third year of university,” he advises.

“Be intentional about academic and professional growth. Engage in research projects that could lead to academic publications. This strengthens your research skills and builds a strong academic profile for graduate applications,” he said.

Kolawole also highlights the power of networking and personal branding, encouraging students to create a strong LinkedIn presence to showcase achievements and connect with professionals in their field.
