AMERICA | A young Black woman named Shakea Miller has defied the odds to earn a degree in Business from the University of Phoenix, United States, after facing numerous setbacks—including dropping out of university twice.
Despite the challenges that forced her to leave school twice, she remained determined to complete her education. In November 2024, she finally earned her business degree, marking a significant personal and professional milestone.
Since her graduation in November 2024, Shakea has achieved even more remarkable milestones. She has been accepted into law school and awarded three honorary doctorate degrees, including an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Humanitarianism.
These accomplishments came after she became one of the first African American women to establish a degree-granting technical college in Alabama.

The college, which officially opened on June 24, 2024, offers a range of degree programs and over 50 new certificate programs designed to meet the demands of a modern, diverse workforce.
Her achievement places her among only six African American women in United States history to establish such an institution.
”By establishing this college, I hope to inspire the next generation of leaders and innovators. We are committed to cultivating an environment that not only educates but also empowers students to create positive change in their communities and beyond,” she said.
Shakea’s journey has not been without challenges. She faced significant obstacles, including becoming a teenage mother, which led to her dropping out of college twice. However, she transformed her hardships into a source of strength and inspiration.
Her dedication to education and her community has earned her numerous accolades, including the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award.
In addition to her entrepreneurial achievements, Shakea was accepted into four of the seven law schools she applied to, receiving two full-ride scholarships and two partial scholarships.
”I have accomplished things I never thought I could ever accomplish in such a short time. A lot of success, a lot of failures but Lord knows it was worth it all,” Shakea said reflecting on her journey.
”I made it off the system and now I’m helping other amazing people overcome their obstacles and run towards their dreams through my businesses. If I can do it, you can too,” she added.
