A brilliant Nigerian man named Micheal Akomolaffe who sold torchlighs and electronic equipment to sponsor himself through school has finally graduated.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a 4.75 cumulative grade point average at the Ekiti State University, Nigeria. In an interview with Punch, Micheal said he faced financial hurdles while in school.

He mentioned that one of the memories that encouraged him to succeed was when he came first in primary school, his father would give him a soft drink. He said the act of service from his parents was one of the things that influenced his decision.  Micheal said he also had a strong passion for electronic gadgets and was always eager to operate the electronic gadgets we had.

Micheal stated that growing up, he used a creative method to power their TV by connecting it to an iron rod in the ground using salt and copper wire. This allowed them to watch TV with low voltage.

He said the experience sparked his interest in Electrical and Electronic Engineering as he wanted to ensure constant power supply at home. Micheal added that his father’s skills as a technician also inspired him.

Micheal said he also faced some challenges when he wanted to enroll in the university. He said he wrote the Unified Matriculation Examination three times and even though he scored above the pass mark, he did not gain admission.

He said he had to take polytechnics and college of education examinations before he was able to gain admission into higher institutions.

”I was frustrated and unhappy during that period. I finished in secondary school in 2006 and three years after that, which was 2009, I had to reluctantly accept the admission offer at The Polytechnic, Ile-Ife, Osun State to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering,” he said.

Micheal said it was after his Higher National Diploma, that he used direct entry to apply to the Ekiti State University (EKSU) adding that it was easy for him to be admitted because he graduated with a good grade point.

At EKSU, Micheal said he was not active with other activities as he was a trader in school to sponsor himself. He said he sold torches, lamps, power banks, and power stations (big power banks, with a small fan, and two DC bulbs, with USB ports for charging phones.

He added that he moved from class to class and across hostels to market those products.  Micheal said though he was busy doing many things at a time, he had no consistent reading schedule, but he understood himself.

He said he plans to own a world-class company in the field of electronics where companies and individuals will be trained on different aspects of electronics and control for industrial applications.

Micheal also aspires to have a company in Nigeria where electronic devices of world-class standards are sold and serviced for the benefit of Nigerians. He said he would like to study abroad for his Master’s degree and PhD in the field of Power Electronics.
