Effective Time Management Technique You can Use As a Student

1. Pomodoro Technique

This technique was created by entrepreneur and author Francesco Cirillo. The Pomodoro technique uses a timer to break down your work into intervals. Each interval is considered a Pomodoro, named after the tomato-shaped timer created by the same author.

Here’s how you can use it:

  • Pick a task you need to get done.
  • Set your timer (e.g., for 20 minutes).
  • Focus deeply on the task at hand.
  • Checkmark on a piece of paper when the timer rings
  • Take a quick break for about three to five minutes. You can either go for a break or do a  non-work-related to give your brain a break.
  • Repeat steps over again: Once you have completed this process four times, you can begin to take longer breaks (20–30 mins).
2. Time Blocking:

The time blocking technique involves planning out your day in advance and dedicating specific time “blocks” for various tasks and responsibilities.

It helps reserve time in your daily schedule for a specific task and the timing is up to you.

How Time blocking works:

  • Map out your day in blocks. Your time blocks can be any amount of time. For example, each time block can be 30 minutes and 1hr, depending on you.
  • Estimate the time it will take you to complete each task and enter the task names into time blocks.
  • After which, you could divide your entire day into 30-minute time blocks and assign the first 30-minute block to eat breakfast.
  • Then assign one or more 30-minute time blocks to other tasks you need to accomplish that day.
  • Add extra time between a few time blocks to allow for unexpected delays and tasks.

Remember to assign your most important tasks to the time of day when you’re most productive, like in the morning.

3. Eisenhower Matrix (Prioritization Grid):

This is a prioritization technique. The Eisenhower Matrix was created by former American President Dwight Eisenhower when he was a commander in the army during World War II.

He created this time management matrix to help him with prioritizing, deleting, and delegating tasks based on importance due to the difficult decisions he has to make at the same time.

The usage entails organizing your tasks into four separate quadrants :

  • Urgent tasks and important tasks/ projects to be done first.
  • Not urgent and important tasks/projects to be scheduled
  • Urgent and unimportant tasks/projects should be delegated
  • Not urgent and unimportant tasks/projects to be deleted

4. Eat That Frog:

Developed by the renowned top sales training and personal success author, Brain tracy, this time management technique has a simple premise: tackle your hardest and most important task first every morning.

The idea came from a famous quote, “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” That is, get the dreaded big task out of the way, and the rest of your day will feel like a breeze!

How you can use this technique:

  • Decide on your biggest goal and what you want to achieve most.
  • Define and set a deadline for your key performance indicators.
  • Make a list of the things you need to do to achieve your goal in order of priority.
  • Tackle your “frogs” first. If you have more than one frog, i.e, hard tasks, tackle the hardest, worst ones first.
5. To-Do List:

A master/To-do list most powerful tool ever discovered for maximum productivity. To create your daily list, write down every single task that you intend to complete over the course of the day.

The rule is that you will increase your efficiency by 25% on the very first day that you start using a list.

Best Strategies for Better Time Management

Start your day with a plan:

Everything starts with a plan. To make the most of your time, the first step is to create a simple and realistic plan for your day. One of the easiest ways to do this is by writing a to-do list. It might sound basic, but having a list of your daily tasks can make a huge difference in how you manage your time.

As you go through your day, tick off each task you complete. This gives you a little boost and shows how much progress you have made.

Set Priorities:

After writing your to-do list, the next step is to organize it by priority. This means figuring out which tasks are the most important and need your attention first. Prioritizing helps you stay focused and use your time wisely.

Break Bigger Projects into Smaller Tasks

One big reason students struggle with time management, especially on large projects, is feeling overwhelmed. When a task feels too big, just put it off and focus on something else to avoid it. The trick is to break the project into smaller, manageable tasks. Instead of stressing about the whole thing, focus on one step at a time.

Limit Distraction

You can use some focus apps to help you cut down on distractions. Think of tools like Focustodo, Freedom, or the Stayfocsd extension. Even though distraction is inevitable, you can control and make a dedicated effort to limit the things that distract you from the big things to the small.

Be Organised

Disorganization can lead to poor management. This simple strategy can help:

Designate three corners of your room of grab three boxes, and label them Keep, Giveaway, Throw out. Now, go through your items, one by one, and sort them into these categories.

Once everything is sorted, take immediate action. Anything in your “Throw out” box should be discarded. For your “Give Away” box, remove them from your space and toss away the unnecessary items.

Avoid Multitasking:

Though it feels like you can get more done by juggling tasks, the truth is that multitasking makes you less productive. Studies consistently show that your brain consumes a lot of mental energy just switching between tasks. Commit to finishing the task you’re on before moving to the next item on your list. This will help you achieve more.

Schedule Effectively

Scheduling is about so much more than just jotting down meetings and appointments. To truly master your time, you need to know yourself and intentionally build in time for the things you want to do, not just what you have to do.

Make sure to plan your most challenging tasks for these high-energy periods. Once you have identified your high-priority activities, block out dedicated time for them first, and then fiercely protect that time from interruptions.

Summarize and review your day

As your day ends, take a few minutes to reflect on what you accomplished and set yourself up for even greater success tomorrow. This is the perfect moment to review your to-do list, celebrate all those items you checked off, and see what’s left to tackle in the morning.

This end-of-day review is also a golden opportunity for honest self-reflection about how effectively you managed your time. This habit helps you keep tabs on urgent tasks and prepare for the next day with greater efficiency.
