AFRICA | A determined young African man named Gabriel Nartey has overcome immense challenges to achieve his lifelong dream of earning a university degree.
Gabriel, who worked as a security guard to support himself through school, has successfully graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Banking and Finance from the University of Ghana, Accra.
Sharing his story on LinkedIn, Gabriel revealed that at one point, he believed this achievement was impossible.
From his first year until the middle of his third year, he worked night shifts as a security guard just to afford accommodation near campus and cover his expenses.

By night, he worked. By day, he studied. Many mornings, he sat in class or wrote exams with heavy eyes, struggling to fight off exhaustion.
Unfortunately, after several months, Gabriel lost his job, making life even more difficult. However, instead of giving up, he secured another job as a part-time teacher, which allowed him to continue his studies.
”When that job ended, things got even harder when I eventually moved to campus. For days, I slept in a lecture hall, unsure of what was next. Still, I refused to give up,” he said
Despite these struggles, Gabriel remained determined and even took on a leadership role as the Organizing Secretary of the Business House Junior Common Room—all while balancing work and school.
“There were moments I wanted to quit, but I kept looking beyond the struggles,” he said. Towards the end of his university journey, he finally got financial help.
Gabriel secured a scholarship from several benevolent organizations, including Axis Pensions Trust Ltd., the University of Ghana Sponsorship Scheme, Christ Assembly Worldwide, as well as some generous individuals behind the scenes.
With this support, he was finally able to focus on his studies without the burden of financial struggles. Despite everything he had been through, Gabriel persevered and graduated with a Second Class Upper—an achievement he is incredibly proud of.
”I made it. I may not have hit my initial target, but graduating with a Second Class Upper is a win I will always be proud of. ,” he said.
To anyone going through tough times, Gabriel urges them not to give up. ”Keep pushing, trust God, and look beyond the struggles. Your best days will soon come and your story will inspire someone else,” she said.
