AMERICA | A young man named Destine Harrison-Williams has defied odds to achieve academic success, earning an Associate’s degree in Economics with a perfect 4.00 GPA despite facing homelessness and financial challenges.
He has also been accepted to Princeton University, one of the Ivy League schools in the United States, to further his studies.
Reflecting on his childhood, Destine recalls bittersweet memories. Raised by his mother, who gave him all the love and support she could despite limited financial resources, he often faced domestic turbulence that disrupted their housing situation.
Many nights were spent on the streets, but his commitment to education remained steadfast. “I remember having to do my homework under a streetlamp at night because it was too painful to go back home,” he said.

Destine’s passion for learning and his love for film were his guiding lights. After high school, he initially enrolled at Tallahassee Community College with aspirations of transferring to Florida State University’s prestigious film school.
However, financial hardship and a medical scare forced him to return home. A recommendation from a high school friend led him to Broward College, where Destine finally found the stability he had long craved.
“I was still dealing with adversity at home. But for once in my life I felt like I was surrounded by teachers who believed that I could overcome it, and who were patient and understanding when I’d come to them with a problem. That’s the kind of support I didn’t have growing up,” Destine said.
Surprisingly, Destine thrived in his new environment. He became a peer mentor in the Minority Male Initiative, earned recognition as a PTK-All USA Scholar, and participated in the Black and Brown and College Bound program.
His academic excellence earned him a place on the 2022 All-Florida Academic Team, alongside only 144 students statewide.
With the encouragement of his professors, Destine applied for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship and was nominated as a semifinalist.
In 2022, he graduated with an Associate of Arts in Economics, earning the honor of serving as the student speaker at the commencement ceremony.
Through his involvement with the Transfer Services Network, Destine secured admission to Princeton University in New Jersey. He hopes his Ivy League education will serve as a platform to advocate for others who face challenges similar to his own.
Destine is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literary Studies at Princeton University, laying the foundation for a future career as an activist.
