AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian man named Joel Durugbo has achieved an extraordinary academic milestone, graduating as the Overall Best Graduating Student of Redeemer’s University, Nigeria.
He graduated from the university with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.00/5.00 in Mechanical Engineering. Joel’s story is one of consistency, discipline, and determination.
Joel's Story and How He Did It
Joel began his undergraduate journey at Redeemer’s University in 2020, driven by a passion for engineering and a commitment to excellence.
Over the course of five years, he maintained an unbroken record of A grades in every course, a feat that ultimately placed him at the very top of his class and the entire university.
In 2025, Joel graduated as the Overall Best Student for the 2024/2025 academic session, making history as the first student in the Faculty of Engineering and the second in the entire university’s history to achieve a perfect 5.00 CGPA.

Beyond academics, Joel actively participated in extracurricular activities, debates, and student leadership roles, balancing his studies with service and professional development.
He was also inducted as a Graduate Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (GMNSE), marking the beginning of what promises to be a brilliant professional career.
Speaking about his journey on LinkedIn, Joel described his academic pursuit as “a journey of grace and hard work,” attributing his success to God, his family, and the dedicated staff of the Mechanical Engineering Department, especially his Dean and Head of Department.
His outstanding performance earned him several prestigious awards at the university’s convocation ceremony, including the Visitor’s Prize and the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for Best Overall Graduating Student.
He also earned the Dean’s Prize for Consistent Placement on the Dean’s List, the Faculty Prize for achieving the Highest CGPA in the Faculty of Engineering, and the Departmental Prize for attaining the Highest CGPA in Mechanical Engineering.
In addition, he was honored with the RUNFF Prize for Best Student in the Faculty of Engineering, the Mouka Award for Excellence for the Highest CGPA in the Faculty, Prof. Oladipupo Osasona’s Prize for Best in the Faculty of Engineering, Peter Isi Egho, FNSE’s Prize for Best in Mechanical Engineering, and Prince Adebayo Akinde’s Prize.
Each award reflects a layer of Joel’s dedication, not just to mastering coursework but to setting new standards for excellence within his field.
