AMERICA | A brilliant young boy named Joseph Alowoloba has secured a scholarship opportunity in the United States and gone on to gain admission into one of the country’s most prestigious institutions, Princeton University.
Joseph earned a place through the Sutton Trust Fulbright Programme, an initiative that introduces outstanding students across the United Kingdom to the American higher education system and supports them through the U.S. college application process.
His journey reflects years of academic excellence and determination, beginning with his family’s move from Nigeria to the United Kingdom in search of better opportunities 16 years ago.
Joseph's Story and How He Did It
Joseph enrolled at Aylesbury Grammar School in Buckinghamshire in 2018, where he quickly distinguished himself academically and in leadership. During his time at the school, he made history as the third Black student ever to become Head Boy in the school’s more than 425-year history.
He graduated in 2025 with outstanding results in his A-level examinations, earning top grades in Mathematics, English Language, and English Literature.
However, his success did not come without challenges. Joseph revealed that commuting two hours daily to school made balancing academics, extracurricular activities, and university applications extremely demanding.

He was simultaneously preparing applications for both U.S. universities and Oxford University, which required him to sit for additional exams and complete extensive essays while still keeping up with his A-level studies.
Alongside this, he maintained extracurricular commitments and part-time work, often leaving him exhausted.
Despite the pressures, Joseph describes his sixth-form years as the most rewarding period of his education. Beyond academics, he excelled in leadership, entrepreneurship, sports, and creative pursuits.
He co-founded a small business with friends, presented at competitions and conferences, performed music at Oxford University, and worked as a football and athletics coach.
Outside school, he also gained professional exposure through work experiences at organizations including Rothschild, Lazard, Lloyd’s Bank, Royal Mail, and internships with GHO Capital Partners LLP and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
Joseph also worked with Att10tive Social Enterprise, contributing to social impact initiatives while exploring potential career paths.
According to him, one of the most life-changing opportunities came through the US-UK Fulbright Commission, which enabled him to visit the United States, build strong friendships, and successfully apply to U.S. universities.
Although Joseph received offers from all the UK universities he applied to — including admission to the University of Oxford to study Economics and Management — he ultimately chose to attend Princeton University.
Reflecting on his journey, Joseph expressed gratitude to his school and mentors who supported him along the way, ending his message with a note of faith and appreciation, giving glory to God for his achievements.
