AFRICA | 22-year-old Lady earns Mechanical Engineering degree with distinction at US university, celebrates achievement.
A 22-year-old Nigerian lady named Karen Ogochukwu Elisha-Wigwe has achieved an outstanding milestone by graduating from Miami University, Ohio, with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, earning a distinction (Cum Laude).
Karen shared her accomplishment on LinkedIn, describing her educational journey at Miami University’s College of Engineering and Computing as enlightening and transformative.
She reflected on the period as one of self-discovery, character-building, and cultivating both intentional and unintentional yet exceptional relationships.

Karen expressed profound gratitude to God, attributing her success to numerous small and mighty miracles that paved her way. She also acknowledged her family for their unwavering support and encouragement, which were instrumental in her journey.
She highlighted the transformative impact of friendships forged during her time at Miami University and expressed deep appreciation for the remarkable faculty and staff.
Additionally, her involvement with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) provided a strong foundation for growth and networking. Karen’s university journey was enriched by her active participation in various roles and activities.
She served as a specialist, shift leader in the dining halls, peer tutor at Rinella Learning Center, Resident Assistant in Withrow Hall, peer mentor for the Miami Leadership Academy, and Graduate Assistant for the College of Engineering and Computing.
Karen added that these experiences not only built her skills but also shaped her character and broadened her perspectives.
Reflecting on her remarkable achievement, Karen remembered the timid teenager who flew alone from Nigeria to Ohio. Through her experiences, she has grown closer to becoming the accomplished engineer she once dreamed of being.
After her graduation in 2022, Karen began a Mechanical Engineering internship at Brunswick Corporation’s i. Jet Lab facility in Illinois. She emphasized that her journey would not have been possible without the collective support of countless individuals who played significant roles in her success.
Karen’s educational journey didn’t stop with her Bachelor’s degree. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Miami University in 2023.
Currently, she is pursuing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin, further solidifying her path as a trailblazer in the field.
