AFRICA | A brilliant young Nigerian woman named Nancy Okosun has achieved a remarkable academic milestone after years of persistence, eventually securing a fully funded scholarship abroad and graduating with distinction at the top of her class.
Nancy earned a Master’s degree in International Business and Law from Griffith College Dublin, graduating as one of the best students in her cohort, marking the culmination of years of determination and resilience.
Nancy's Story and How She Did It
Nancy began her academic journey at Rivers State University, in Nigeria, where she earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 2019. Following her undergraduate studies, she proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, the mandatory professional training program for law graduates in Nigeria.
In 2021, she completed the program and was called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
After law school, Nancy began building her career as a legal associate, gaining professional experience across the NGO and finance sectors, where she worked on legal and regulatory matters.
Reflecting on her professional growth, Nancy shared that her experiences helped her develop a passion for building transparent and ethical systems that benefit both businesses and the public.
Despite building a promising legal career, Nancy remained determined to further her education abroad. However, funding remained a major obstacle.
For nearly four years, she consistently searched and applied for scholarship opportunities, facing multiple setbacks along the way. But she remained persistent, believing that the right opportunity would eventually come.
Her breakthrough finally arrived when she secured a fully funded scholarship to study at Griffith College Dublin, allowing her to pursue a Master’s degree without financial burden.
In 2024, Nancy relocated to Ireland to begin her postgraduate studies. Adjusting to a new academic environment while managing life in a new country was not easy.
She balanced full-time study with part-time work, navigated cultural adjustments, and pushed through moments of uncertainty. Despite these challenges, Nancy maintained academic excellence throughout her program.
Her efforts paid off when she graduated with distinction, emerging among the top students in her class.
Sharing her achievement on LinkedIn, Nancy emphasized that her success represents much more than academic accomplishment.
According to her, the milestone reflects years of persistence, adaptation, and growth, from tirelessly applying for scholarships to finally securing funding, relocating abroad, and learning to thrive despite challenges.
Throughout her journey, she remained deeply interested in Compliance, Data Privacy, and AI Governance, areas she hopes to continue building expertise in as her career progresses.
Nancy expressed deep appreciation to the people who supported her journey, particularly her lecturers and mentors who guided her beyond the classroom, as well as friends who stood by her throughout the demanding academic period.
She also acknowledged the role of faith and perseverance in helping her reach this milestone.
