AFRICA | A determined man finally wins scholarship after 4 years of rejections, earns 1 bachelors, 2 masters and certification from US university.
A determined man named Ewura Adams Karim fought hard to secure a scholarship opportunity after four years of persistent applications.
Ewura, a Ghanaian, finally won the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders in 2024 after persistently applying for the opportunity since 2019.
Celebrating his achievement, he shared that he completed both the Mandela Washington Fellowship and the Leadership in Civic Engagement Program at Louisiana State University in the United States simultaneously.

Ewura began his higher studies at the University of Ghana, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts, and then proceeded to the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), where he earned his first master’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy.
He recently obtained another master’s degree in International Law and Legal Studies at the University of Ghana, Accra.
From the beginning, Ewura said he never gave up on his goals, despite facing setbacks. He consistently worked towards his aspirations, dedicating himself to improving his skills and pursuing opportunities.
For instance, in 2014, he lost the chance to become president of the Ashanti Regional Student Representative Council but eventually became Vice President. At his handing-over congress, he was awarded the titles of Most Hardworking Regional Executive and Outstanding Regional Executive.
In 2018, although he did not win the election to become SRC President of the University of Ghana, he succeeded in the General Assembly election to become the head of the SRC legislature.
He was also honored as the Most Influential Student at the University of Ghana in 2019. Furthermore, Ewura was selected for the Obama Africa Leaders Program, representing 32 young leaders across the African continent.
Ewura attributes his achievements to divine intervention, stating that God has always been with him in his endeavors.
He recounted a life-threatening accident from which he was saved by the swift actions of bystanders and medical personnel. In 2023, he lost his job and received threats after attending a protest and speaking truth to power.
Ewura also highlighted that he nearly missed the Mandela Washington Fellowship interview when his flight was canceled, yet he remained resilient, persevering through these challenges.
Advising other scholars, Ewura emphasized the importance of resilience, stating that those who are not ready to face adversity and emerge stronger are unlikely to succeed.
