59-year-old man who never missed work as a mailman for 31 years finally retires, gets rewarded for his dedication

AMERICA | 59-year-old man who never missed work as a mailman for 31 years finally retires, gets rewarded for his dedication.

A 59-year-old mailman, Bill Buda retired from the United States Postal Service(USPS) in a heartwarming send-off organized by the community he faithfully served. The memorable occasion was captured in a viral video shared by his daughter, Alexa Buda, on Instagram.

In the clip, Bill can be seen delivering mail on his last day, accompanied by his family. As he made his final rounds, neighbors came out to celebrate his retirement, decorating their porches with balloons, drawings, and heartfelt notes.

“People will NEVER forget how you made them feel #ohio,” Alexa wrote in the video’s caption, showing the deep appreciation the community felt for her father.

Bill shared with Good Morning America that his customers had been curious about his retirement plans.

To keep everyone informed, he created and distributed “save the date” cards, letting them know his final workday would be on a Saturday so he could say goodbye to as many people as possible.

Still, the overwhelming support and love from the community took him by surprise. “When you see all that on Saturday, with everybody, kind of, to me, almost going overboard, you’re like, ‘Man, I guess for 24 and a half years on this route, I really must have done something right to have this.’ So it was fantastic,” he said.

Bill’s journey to becoming a mailman was not straightforward. After graduating college with two degrees and playing basketball, he was set to pursue a professional basketball career overseas.

However, a heart condition derailed those plans, and layoffs in the early 1990s left him searching for work.

Encouraged by his father, Bill applied to the post office. During his interview, he discovered that the postmaster was someone he already knew. Two days later, he was hired, beginning a career that would span three decades. “I came in on that Saturday and never left,” Bill recalled.

Throughout his career, Bill rarely missed a day of work, earning him a streak of 11 consecutive years of perfect attendance. His dedication was not just about punctuality—it was about community.

“People think delivering mail is a piece of cake, but it’s so much more than that,” he explained.

“You’re checking on the elderly, noticing when things are out of place, like a garage door left open when it shouldn’t be, or making sure piled-up mail doesn’t signal trouble,” he added.

As he begins this new chapter, Bill is excited to focus on his passions and family. He is looking forward to attending “any sporting event I can.

“It’s my turn now. I’m all set to hit as many sporting events as I can. I can’t wait to spend time with my daughters, their soon-to-be husbands, my mom, and my wife,” he said with enthusiasm.
