Meet Julian Brown, the 22-year-old man who turns plastic waste into fuel

AMERICA | A brilliant 22-year-old inventor from Atlanta, Georgia, Julian Brown, is redefining how the world views plastic waste.

Through years of self-taught engineering and scientific experimentation, he developed a method to convert discarded plastic into usable fuel for Cars and automobiles.

Julian’s invention caught international attention and many praised him for his potential to fight pollution and power vehicles sustainably.

Julian's Story and How He Did It

Julian’s journey began in high school, when his curiosity about how things worked and his talent for welding sparked an interest in environmental innovation.

He learned that plastic, made from crude oil, could theoretically be converted back into fuel. That discovery ignited a passion which he decided to work towards.

“After finding out that plastic is made of crude oil and can be turned back into fuel with a reactor, I decided to build one myself. I saw a problem that needed a solution, so I jumped right into taking action and being the change I wanted to see,” Julian said.

With limited resources, Julian began building his first prototype using scrap metal, broken microwave parts, and spare lab equipment.

However, the process was challenging. He spent years running hundreds of failed experiments before finally finding success.

His method, known as microwave pyrolysis, uses solar-powered microwaves to heat plastic in the absence of oxygen until it breaks down into liquid hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons can then be refined into gasoline, diesel, or even jet fuel.

What makes Julian’s process remarkable is its potential to make recycling profitable and environmentally friendly.  “The reason why recycling hasn’t been done at scale is because it hasn’t been profitable,” he said. 

“Now, we can make something of super high value out of what was once considered waste,” he added. His invention, if validated and scaled, could revolutionize how the world handles plastic pollution.

Julian’s innovation has already passed real-world testing. During a demonstration, he used his fuel—aptly named Plastoline, to power a 2023 Dodge Scat Pack muscle car, proving that his invention was not just theoretical.

The car roared to life, running entirely on recycled plastic fuel, as captured in a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter). His company, Naturejab, has since partnered with ASAP Labs to conduct further fuel testing and expand his work.

Energy experts have praised his approach, noting that microwave pyrolysis could significantly reduce both plastic waste and global fuel dependency if verified and replicated safely.

Beyond the science, Julian’s story is one of persistence, curiosity, and purpose. He taught himself complex chemical engineering concepts using online resources, demonstrating how accessible knowledge can drive real-world innovation.

Julian’s  resilience also stems from a deep sense of environmental responsibility. “I wanted to show that plastic doesn’t have to destroy the planet—it can power it,” he said.
