AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian named Nelson Elijah has achieved another extraordinary academic milestone, securing the prestigious Mastercard Foundation Scholarship to pursue a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
This achievement comes after he made headlines for graduating as the overall best student of Covenant University with a near-perfect 4.98 cumulative grade point average Nelson’s journey is a remarkable story of perseverance, focus, and purpose.
Nelson's Story and How She Did It
His academic pursuit began at Covenant University, Nigeria, where he studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering. From his first year, Nelson maintained academic excellence, scoring an A grade and only one B throughout.
His hard work and brilliance paid off when he graduated in 2023 with First Class Honours, achieving one of the highest CGPAs in the university’s history — 4.98 out of 5.00.
His consistency and dedication earned him multiple distinctions, the Best Graduating Student in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Best in the College of Engineering, and the Overall Best Graduating Student of Covenant University’s 18th graduating set.
These recognitions reflected not only his intelligence but also his unwavering commitment to academic excellence.
Building on this success, Nelson went on to secure the highly competitive Mastercard Foundation Scholarship in 2025, a fully funded award that supports exceptional young Africans to study at world-class universities.
Out of 4,128 applicants, Nelson was among just 69 scholars selected for the program — a testament to his brilliance and academic merit.
Reflecting on his journey, Nelson shared that his path to success was not without setbacks. He once faced rejection from Stanford University but remained resolute.
“I knew I had the story. I spent the last six years of my life in college learning and optimizing for graduate school. If the story wasn’t going to come from within, I wouldn’t budge a dime,” he wrote. “
”The ‘apply to many; it’s a numbers game’ advice never appealed to me. It was either the top five universities in the world or nothing,” he added.
This clarity of vision guided his academic steps, proving that true success often requires patience and focus rather than chance.
Nelson expressed deep gratitude to his parents for their prayers, as well as his recommenders, research mentors, and friends who stood by him throughout the journey.
Now preparing for his next chapter at Cambridge, Nelson hopes to inspire others by sharing his story. He revealed plans to write one of the most unconventional career books in Nigeria, reflecting on his six-year academic journey and the lessons learned along the way.
